Latency??

Can someone explain what's going on for me?

I record a metronome sound on an audio track.
I play that while recording some simple melodies in track 2 and accompaniment in track 3 (all from my keyboard).

When played back, all tracks start in sync, but after about 90 seconds, it appears that tracks two and three gain tempo on track one (or perhaps track one slows down in relation to the other tracks).

It also appears that tracks two and three remain in sync with respect to each other.

Of course, I'd love to have everything constantly in sync.

My equipment: Computer - Pentium IV 3.0 gHz, 512 mb RAM, 800 mhz FSB, plenty of HD space, one internal drive, six external firewire drives - two of them could be interfaced via usb if I chose.

It seems that Vegas doesn't care if I record to the internal drive or the external ones.

Anyone who could offer tips to help me understand the cause of this problem and some suggestions on how best to deal with it is welcome to comment.

Thanks in advance.

I know this is an audio related question, and I'll post it over there as well, but have always had quicker response here.

Thanks again,
Caruso

What soundcard, what driver version, what audio device type (Vegas>options>prefs>audio device type> )?

This is a problem I had at one time. I switched my 'Ruler' in 'Project video properties' to "SMPTE non-drop 29.97" and that fixed it for me. But everytime I mention this, somebody usually chimes in that the SMPTE setting doesn't/shouldn't make a difference. Also make sure your audio rate is the same on all tracks.(44.1Khz or 48Khz. And maybe, this is something that only does this because of my audio card??? Who knows, there seems to be so many possible problems with different hardware.

The sound card is a Creative SB Audigy LS. Driver is from Creative, version 8.12.1.55 dated 2/4/03.

Thanks, Caruso

For what it's worth, this problem occured in my system because the SB card I am using only supports 48 or 96 khz sampling, not 44.1. I changed my sample rate to 48, and the problem went away.

The solution was posted over on the Audio forum.

Thought I'd post it here for anyone else who might encounter the problem from time to time.

Thanks all.

Maybe I should have mentioned that I always use 48Khz and you would have found out sooner. I just thought as long as all tracks were the same, it would work. I forgot to mention that my soundcard it the Creative Audigy Platinum 2. Similar???
