latency

I have recently updated to a Dell server machine....big processing power...etc. I have an ongoing latency problem with any project that has a few tracks of audio and video. That is, when I try to play the video can't stay in sync with the audio. Is this "just the way it is" with Vegas or is there something that I need to do to the machine to correct this? Is there something more than the obvious in preferences in Vegas to ensure that the software is utilizing all the processing power of the machine?

I just spent a couple of hours training on final cut and the mac/software had no such problems. So now " I know" there is a better way to do this. How have you solved latency issues with a machine that should be big and powerfull enough to play with the audio and video staying in sync? Can anyone help me with this?

Much appreciated

Vegas Options\Preferences\Audio Device tab has a playback buffering setting (mine's at 0.10) and also a checkbox "Automatically detect and offset for hardware recording latency". You can see if they have any effect.

You might also try various settings of XP's Audio Performance Settings.
Control Panel\Sounds and Audio Devices\Audio tab\Sound Playback advanced properties. Mine is at Full Hardware Acceleration. If you are having problems at Full, you might drop that back a bit to see if it clears it up.

thank you dave......as always i have not described my problem very well. The issue is with the video. The audio plays fine, while the video "sticks" etc.....it won't keep up with the audio even in draft mode on the preview. Any ideas.

For obvious reasons Vegas gives preference to the audio. It sounds to me like you've got some bottleneck in their, I can get full rate playback of audio and video on a 800Mhz PIII laptop, depending on the Dell it should be eating this up but then again Dell are notorious for cutting corners to keep costs down on their consummer line.
There's heaps of info around in this forum and the knowledge base on how to optimise any PC for editing. It's advice that'll hold true with Vegas or any other NLE too.
Your problem could be hardware or how Windoz is setup.

The forum has been through this several times recently. Here is a recent link:

If you fill out your system information in the My Account section at the top of the page, we can see what type of system you have and can give you feedback on what performance to expect.

I have a P4 3.2 and get realtime SD no problems at good quality.
