Latency

I've just upgraded after many years from Vegas 7 to 11. It's all going well but one little gripe and I was wondering whether anyone had encountered a similar problem.

I have an M-Audio Delta 44 card with the latency set for 64 samples

Whenever I open a new project and go to start recording with Input monitor set to on, I get the hollow sound that you get when the latency is to high. I can fix by going to Pref > Audio Device > Advanced to the M-Audio config panel, but without changing anything, the sound is fine when I return to the project.

Just as a side note - is there a marked increase in sound quality between 7 & 11 or is it an audio placebo effect?

"Hollow sound" ? No ....

Are you mixing an "Input Monitoring" signal with a direct monitoring signal to give a comb-filtering effect ? Is just in monitored sound, or in the recorded sound ?

64 samples is pretty ambitious though, I've never gone below 128, and have never notice a timing (or sound) problem.

Any 'sound quality' difference is likely to be psychologically induced. Even if there are changes in the internal processing, moving your head a few inches would likely cause a greater difference.

It's just the monitored sound and not the recorded. And like I said it immediately disappears when I go to audio device > advanced > configure device, do nothing and go back to recording.

Anyway not a big problem - just wondering.

64 samples seems to be working just fine as well.

And I never move my head a few inches as I have a metal clamp which holds my head in the perfect monitoring position! : ) Can never be too careful.

Cheers

OK, something definitely a bit odd there then. No idea on cure, but must be a pain having to do that procedure every session !

FWIW there is an excellent video by Ethan Winer regarding the comment on degree of head movement in a room to totally swamp supposed 'subtle' audio differences.

that is a bizarre phenomenon... do you have latest M-Audio drivers installed?

Yes - got everything - a complete fresh install - but it's no biggie.

Thanks for the thoughts and I'm just watching the video now about monitoring position - FWIW I still monitor through same speakers since the 80s. Rogers LS35As - I always know what I'm listening to.

Hey - me too LS3-5As ! Up in proper bookshelf location, and now with a sub augmenting the low end such as it is. I built mine myself, including winding the inductors and auto-transformer, but lined them with 1/8" lead instead of the bitumous panel.
