...a reason to install Vista?

The compelling reason to install Vista is to make sure your movies will play on Vista.

Doesn't mean that you need to install Vegas on Vista, but if your clients use computers to view your work then you may find that you need it as a test bed.

And of course if you wait six months and don't hear of any problems then maybe you can just skip testing. Personally, I don't expect the issur to even come up for another 6 months.

jaydeeee, you hate vista,, cool, but the thing is if you use a pc and need to move forward you will be using it,, or you will never be up to snuff with the latest and greatest from third party software mfg.. I dont mean next week or next month,, maybe not even next year , but you WILL use it or some variation of it,,, or you will be using a mac, or you will be using vegas 7 when others are using vegas super galactica 9h and aftereffects hologramific 44
of course thats just my opinion

Nick - it may not be as full featured, but there is a commercial app for Linux made by Main Concept called MainActor - runs on Suse and Ubuntu 32 bit versions - tried it out - it's not too bad!

jaydeee, have you been taking forum etiquette lessons from BillyBoy?

I heard from Sally-Mae, you know, the one who used to go out with Johnny but didn't really like him that much but then after Valentines, oh, she couldn't get over him? Well ... I heard from Sally-Mae that Vista randomly deletes your documents as part of some user security service! I also heard that it will disable your video card whenever you try to watch a video because it thinks you're a pirate, and it will disable your key, and your XP key, and your house key.

I also heard from Ted, the one down the hall Ted, you know, with the bald spot he always tries to cover but then always forgets the spot in the back? Well, I heard from Ted that Vista's search engine is designed to slow your PC down until it's forced to hibernate, that way you have to buy a new copy of Vista, but Ted says your second copy of Vista actually costs twice as much, and that only after your purchase your third copy the operating system will start working.

And Steve? You know, the rich one who went off to build computers named after fruit? He says you should just buy a Mac.

What do you mean, it's just all hearsay? Why would everyone be complaining if it wasn't all true, gawd, what's your problem.

There's nothing wrong with my etiquette - especially when it comes to this tired excuse of an OS "upgrade" (believe me - I'm censoring what I'd prefer to call it).
I don't know who/what billyboy is, but I love the name.

LOL, oh come on now. My films will play fine on your vista - no need to own it.
No need to even look at it or utter it's name.

If they don't, here's a quick fix: uninstall Vista, reinstall XP/XP64.
Reboot. Enjoy.

Depends on what you're doing. I'd assume that video would play on Vista in all cases but I remember we had clients with problems during the first year or so of transition from win2k to SP.

Since they were the customer (who is always right, remember?), we had to troubleshoot the problem. Telling them to uninstall the OS on a few hundred computers wasn't an option.

But of course if you are just outputting to tape, that's a pretty stable technology. No need to worry. On the other hand, if you're customer can't play your DVD on their Vista-based machine, it's going to be your product that was the failure. Maybe you can convince them it's their computer but only at the risk of making them unhappy long-term and associating that with you, the person who makes them feel bad.
