Legal

I am doing a short clip that will have a TV in it. I was hoping to have some sort of a sports game on it in the background. Can I legally do that? They always say that the games cannot be rebroadcast, or used for other stuff. If I can't, can I film a local high school game and put it on the TV, or would there be some sort of problem with that? Thanks. Cin

Use a Army versus Navy Game.

Enter the realm of DRM. Technically no. ( Especially if it is a film you plan to make some money on). People get away with it on youtube all the time, but those days may be numbered. I believe artistic license may give you a little wiggle room depending on the length and focus of the piece and whether or not it is used for "educational purposes". I would think you filming a public game for your own use may be a little better situation, however, you may need their permission if it is something you plan to sell. I saw a link to a University (Princeton?) that explored this question with a creative short using all Disney clips - which they suggested was okay the way the did it. I am not an attorney and I to date haven't sold any of my stuff. I would recommend you consult an attorney before you get too far down the road. I will try to find that link for you - it was from a discussion over in Vegas. In fact there are a lot of folks in that forum that make a living doing video's and deal with questions like your all the time. You might find some sage advice there as well.

p.s. If I can find that link I will toss it in later.

Thanks rustier and 4eyes. I liked the link you sent, it was very cute. Not sure what I am going to do. I guess I will head over to the 'big board' and see if someone might know anything else. Thanks again. Cin

Why not just shoot some video yourself of some local sports event and display that on the TV?

Thanks for the reply Dave. That is what I was wondering if I could do. I thought of going to the local high school, and shooting some film there, but I'm not sure if I could even do that without some how stepping on someones legal toes :/ Cin

Just curious, OMYGOSH....How big of a production will this be. i.e. will it be in the publc domain so hundreds (or more) people can see it?
I have had similar concerns in making videos in small amounts (eg. a class of 60 or so) at a local school (class video) with music background.

royalty free stock footage may be the answer - if you do a search there are some links to some web sites.
