Lessons learned from using VOB files

I imported VOB files into Vegas 6 this weekend for the first time, works great!

One thing I learned however, is to rename the VOB files with another name. I imported VOB files from two different DVDs, so there were multiple copies of files with the same name. This was fine on my laptop, which I started on, but then I moved the files to my main editing PC, some of the files got mixed up, showing the wrong footage in certain points. It only added another 45 minutes to the project, but I will rename VOB files first, next time, to avoid this mess.

How well did the audio come across? I too did some DVD VOB's and I had trouble with some of the audio either being out of sync or very slow in speed while the video worked fine.
BTW did you use the Import DVD Camcorder Disc option in the file menu?

I have a DVD403 Sony Camcorder. I used the import from dvdcamcorder feature in Vegas and the import worked well. Sound and video came in perfectly.

Unfortunately, when I output to dvd, the resulting movie is of very poor quality. I would say about 1/2 as good as the original.

I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar result. I am wondering if the compressed output of the DVD403 dvd is not holding up when outputting to DVD because of multiple compression. I paid to open support incident with sony software and have done all of their suggestions with the same (poor) results.

I would be interested the results that others who have had when doing editing projects with this camera.

best regards,
brent

My workflow,
Put the VOB on Vegas timeline, add video filters to enrich the video.
mpeg file tend to lose color details.

Add a small noise reduction using the median filter.

Rendered to dv avi file.
Work it from there.

I always just do an analog capture from a DVD player through my Canopus box...I seem to get better results that way and it's a lot easier to edit with an AVI than a VOB file.

I didn't need the audio, so I can't help you there. The files are rendering now, so I will let you know about the quality.... just a family project, so hopefully the quality is OK.

I will post here the results.

I watched the DVD last night. The footage captured from the VOB files looked great. This is just for a family project, so I am not being too picky about the project. But, reviewing the footage, it basically looks as good as the original DVD.

Dev what procedure did you go through to get the VOB's to the timeline? Did you just place the straight VOB's there as LAW stated or did you go through the Import feature of Vegas, where it renames the VOB's to mpg files and then add them [mpg] to the timeline?
