Light sweep on text effect

I saw an article at creativecow.com on how to give the effect of light sweeping over text. The example was made with Vegas Video using 4 video tracks. Of course in Video Factory we only have two video tracks. Is there a way to duplicate this effect with Video Factory? It's not that he's using 4 tracks as much as it is that he's using parent/child composition using a luminance mask and track motion, all three of which aren't available in VF. If you want to do multi-track compositing effects like this, it’s a good reason to upgrade to Vegas. That’s primarily why I did.
