Doesn't your camcorder have a composite video output that you can connect to a regular monitor?
I think Vegas will capture HDV live over firewire which would also give you a monitor but I've never done this so I cannot say for sure it'd work. The best solution would be HD Rack but you can only get that bundled with Adobe products.

Thanks Bob. I'll try the composite outs. I have to ride the controls a bit on the projector so as long as I can see something live it doesn't matter if I have to record to the camera hard drive first.

I was hoping to do live capture with Vegas or Virtualdub but that looks like a no go with this camera. Excellent picture on this thing though.

Yes, Vegas will capture HDV live via Firewire and it gives you a monitor window during the capture process.

Unfortunately, the firewire on this camera does not do that. Live capture/monitor worked with my 4 year old Sony Dv camcorder. The only solution seems to be a TV with HDMI.
