Lock Markers

Dave321 wrote on 4/14/2009, 11:39 PM
Using VMS 8.0

I understand that locking markers to a clip is not an available function. However, I read in another post that selecting, "All Tracks, Markers and Regions" for the Auto Ripple option would move the markers when inserting or deleting in the timeline. Could some please confirm that this does in fact work as I've not had any success.

Thanks

It works dandy for me. The problem with auto-ripple is that it works fine once you understand what, how, and why it does what it does and then you match your expectations to that. Once you get over that hurdle it's a very useful tool. I have it on almost all the time. About the only time i ever turn it off is when i'm adjusting out-of-sync audio.

Are you sure that you are enabling the AutoRipple button when needed? (i.e. not just selecting the "All Tracks, Markers, and Regions" option, but leaving AutoRipple disabled)

Also, this might not be what you're asking for, but you can lock markers to a clip (in a way) by embedding them within the clip. Open the clip in the trimmer, add the markers there (in the trimmer window), and then wherever you use that clip you'll see little markers embedded in it. This is very useful in marking the beat of a piece of music, for example, so that the (mini) markers stay with the music if you move it left or right on the timeline.

However, I don't recall if anything will snap to these mini-markers. In Vegas Pro there is an option to promote these markers into "real" markers. I'm not sure if Movie Studio has that same functionality.

Seems straight forward but still not working for me.

Pressing the auto ripple icon or typing ctrl+L clearly indicates whether the option is selected or not so I think I've got that part correct.

Here are the steps I'm performing:
1. start a new project with Auto Ripple enabled and "All Tracks, Markers and Regions" selected
2. Import a couple of clips (avi files)
3. Place a marker somewhere in the second clip
4. From the Insert menu option I select "Time..." and add 10 minutes
5. The second clip moves 10 minutes further down the time line but the marker does not move.

I have a much larger project with about 20 markers that responds the same way, just wanted to test this with a separate smaller project. What I’ve done up until now is to select each of the makers individually down stream of the change, then drag the first one to its new location and all others follow.

Hi Dave,
Place your marker on a unique frame you will remember. If you then leave the time ruler over the marker and add time, you will see from that point on your empty time. Then move your time ruler back by one frame and you will see your marker is still on your unique frame. If you add time (or whatever other media) either before or after the marker you will still see that the marker is still associated with that frame as long as you have Auto Ripple with "All Tracks, Markers and Regions" selected. Play with it a bit and let us know if it works. Cin

Starting to get a bit embarrassed here… I’m sure I’ll be kicking myself when it’s finally solved – and I’m not even all that new to VMS, just long periods between using it.

Okay OhMyGosh, I'm sure I did exactly what you said...

1. I opened a new project making sure that "All Tracks, Markers and Regions" was selected (3 options in the pull down menu, a dot beside the 3rd option).
2. Then made sure Auto Ripple was selected (ripple icon pressed in/hi-lited).
3. imported a small clip ( ~2 min. in length) and placed a marker at about 1 minute point.
4. Leaving the cursor/time ruler over the marker I inserted a 10 sec space. As you indicated and as I've experienced in previous testing, the marker did not move.
5. I then inserted another 10 sec space before the marker. The space was inserted and the ripple effect shifted the clip sections to the right but the Marker did not move.

It just seems sooooo simple but it's not working.

Sorry, and I really appreciate all of your help

All I can say Dave is 'Wow!' I just can't reproduce what you are doing for anything :/ I am using VMSP 9, but that shouldn't make a difference. I have been using it before it was even called Vegas, and I don't remember it not working this way :O The last suggestion I have would be to close the program, hold the ctrl and shift button down and then click on whatever you click on to open the program. It will ask you if you want to reset all settings to it's new state. I would click 'yes' and see if that works (remember, by doing so you will lose any custom settings or templates you may have made). Sorry can't be of more help. Let us know how it goes. Cin

I use Markers enough that having to re-enter my preferences and file locations would be a small price to pay, so I went ahead and reset all settings...

This had no effect, guess I'm back to moving Markers manually.

I really appreciate all of your time. It's really nice to have this kind of support available.

Hi Dave,
Last try. You can always download the free trial version of VMSP 9, and see if perhaps it's a 'new' feature that 8 didn't have. It's a long shot, but possible............Good luck. Cin

I'm having the same problem. When I place markers within a clip and then delete a portion of the clip with auto-ripple on, the markers do not move and thus are marking new (wrong) portions of the clip. Even with auto-ripple turned off, when I delete a portion and slide the two pieces together the markers do not move with the slide. Very frustrating.

I just tried the same scenario with sound forge audio studio and the markers move with the clip.
