Why would you want to capure on to another computer in another part of the world? While it might be nice, it is not practical.

Log and capture is not available separately.

I've not tried this, but... What if they install the demo?

Hmnmmm. VidCap 2 was a freebie utility download at one time. I remember downloading it to use with VideoFactory 1. I don't see it listed anymore, but i wonder if VidCap is still basically a freebie. No registration, serial number, or activation code is required to use it. You can copy the vidcap.exe file to another computer and it runs by itself. Perhaps a quick call to customer support asking if this is allowed or not would be in order.

If you can't do the Vegas capture, you may want to look into Scenalyzer.

link It's $40

If you use the vidcap portion outside of VV it is a "lite" version, you can't do batch capture and can only print back to tape one file at a time.

filmy, i always run the vidcap program outside of Vegas (even have a shortcut for it on my Start menu). It has full functionality. Is it possible you're running an older version of it when you run it independantly? The newer version is vidcap40.exe and is 3,236KB. The Help/About screen shows it as Sonic Foundry Video Capture 4.0 with the same release & build numbers as Vegas.

Cool, thanks!

Oh, and Swarrine - it's because I have 3 shooters capturing footage in Milan, London & Paris - and we're looking at setting up our own upload/download network where we log and capture over there on notebooks being provided to the shooters, then uploaded to our servers, then downloaded to editorial here.

Do you have any idea what it's going to cost to shift that amount of data?

If uploading video files isn't technically feasible, you could still have your shooters log the tapes, then send the SFVIDCAP files over the network. Mail the DV tapes (keeping a digital backup, of course) to the main editor.

You could probably also do something with low-res files with a timecode stamp if your central editor needs to get started right away, and can't wait for the mail.

Just a thought.

I have always had that happen - I mean if I run it alone it comes up as "Sonic Foundry VIdeo Capture Xpress 4.0". I do not have the latest version, maybe there was more of a change with the "e" version than just the Sony branding? I was a bit bothered at first but I just run it out of the main interface with no issues.

In any case I thought I would bring it up because you can install it as a stand alone except it runs as "Sonic Foundry VIdeo Capture Xpress" but I have no idea if you "buy" it alone.

Really at the end of the day all you're after is a bit of code to move the data from the tape to the HD. Even Winddoz Movie Maker should be able to handle that and it is free.
