Never seen this. Not once, even on a piii 800 laptop running Windows XP Home with 256 meg RAM. Howzabout posting system specs, I'll wager a happy meal that it's hardware related to a system you likely built at home.
At the risk of sounding condescending....Sloppy coding? C'mon. NO former Sonic Foundry application in 13 years could EVER be accused of sloppy coding. Other issues perhaps, but sloppy coding ain't one of them.
That's a pretty broad brush to paint anything with, particularly given that Sony's engineers in Madison are among the most sought after guys in the biz.

Do a quick search and take a look at the post talking about "wowexec". See if this is what's happening to you.

thanks,, for the lead ,,that is exactly what I'm experiencing,, I'm looking into it. To answer to spot,,,no,, I do not have a custom built computer,,It's a gateway ,purchased from gateway,,,,,,,, Maybe ,I should tone down my accusations but I'm still trying to justify this vegas 5 update,, if it was free or if it was a beta then I would feel differently,,,,,, nobody likes feeling cheated,,,,,,,,

I just turned off hardware acceleration ,, vegas 5 opens quicker , then I re-booted opened vegas and it froze a little but not as much when I had the hardware acceleratio on,, ,I take that back, just opened V5 and its frozen again, it seems to reset ,,, I removed all usb connections and vegas opened very quick,,once again I re-booted then opened v5 without any usb connections and it froze about 30 sec,,,,, I hooked up the usb connections then opened v5 and it opened quick,,re-booted opened v5 and it froze.... obvious pattern of infomation going on here,, but what,,,, OT,, but why doesn't this problem exist in V4?

Try this:

Download and install the latest drivers for your scanner.

Find the file "TWAIN_32.DLL" that gets installed by this new driver pack (probably installed into an HP folder).

Copy "Twain32.dll" into the WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 folder, choose yes to overwrite existing when prompted.

At least one other HP scanner user did this and it fixed his slow startup problem.
