Long Time For XP To 'Re-Focus' Back On Vegas7

Hi Guys,

I haven't noticed this on any previous versions of Vegas - but now in 7 - if I click on another app in windows, and do some work in it - or even just for a few seconds - and then click back in Vegas - I am finding that I have to wait 30-45 seconds (approx) for the application to re-obtain its focus - so that I can begin working.

I presume its doing something with XP's pagefile - though I always make sure it is defragmented - and also I use RamBooster.

It is quite a largish project - 268 items over 40 mins.

As I said - it is only with Vegas 7 that this is a problem.

Quite frustrating - though I suppose it will keep me from causal surfing!

Try this:

Go to Options >> Preferences.
12th item down on the General Preferences tab:

[ ] Close media files when not the active application

Make sure this option is unchecked. Otherwise, Vegas apparently closes all files (video, still photos, etc) when it loses focus, and has to re-open all (recreate thumbnails, etc.?) when focus returns to Vegas.

PS: You had probably unchecked this on previous version of Vegas. I think default is always to have that box checked. (And maybe there's a good reason it defaults that way -- I don't really know.)

Well Tim, a word of caution here? Maybe?

What the Online Help states is that when this option IS "checked" then it makes any files on the Timeline available for an external editor. Now for my own workflow this is useful, as I often "open" an audio section of the Veg media as a copy within Sound Forge. I'm presuming that something would be stopped from working in the way I had expected if I deselect this Preference - yeah? Maybe when I'd worked on this audio and saved within Sound Forge, the section would not come BACK as a TAKE? I don't know.

If you do not have this option ticked then you will NOT be able to work on any files on your timeline (or even in the project's media bin). If you attempt to save over them you will get a sharing violation.

I would rather look to the question of why it's taking 30-45 seconds to re-open your files - it happens on my PC basically instantly for my last project in V7, with 183 active files, so I wouldn't expect 268 to be THAT much slower. What kind of disk system are you using?

My current project with 350 files opens in 9 seconds (Vegas 7b) from COLD. Run system maintenance, defrag your memory and registry etc. ALSO use the save with trimmed media option to eliminate unused footage from your saving folder.
