You don't specify keyframes with SonyAVC, you just let it do it automatically.

Ah, i see, on the auto keyframes.

The process of mp4, FastStart will work in general for me, but i still have a hurdle with my site that is all Darwin streaming server, in that it will only play .mov and not .mp4.

I'll either have to live with the gamma (which destroys the beginning and end of a certain piece that relies on some subtlety) or move away from using Darwin to Flash streaming, which will be a huge amount of work, going back and redesigning the site and transcoding finished pieces. I think i'll just wait a bit and see if Apple will fix Quicktime or provide a workaround.

I'm always amazed at how no matter what i attempt in the video world at this fledgeling point, there is always some roadblock or compromise - seems like there is still a ways to go for this stuff to mature.

For general info, i did finally get this figured out. I export from Vegas as a QuickTime .mov using Photo-JPEG best, then in QT Pro can export to H.264 .mov without any gamma bug effects.

This project is set to render as progressive - i haven't tried this process with a project set to interlaced, but my guess is that for that it might be preferrable to export as Motion-JPEG A rather than Photo-JPEG.
