Low Memory Exception/Error

24Peter wrote on 6/2/2010, 6:41 AM
Whenever I render to WMV 11 1080 24p file at various points in the render, Vegas quits and I get a low mem exception. (Vegas Pro 9e 64 on Win 7 64 machine.) When I render the same file at 720p (same bit rate & other settings) it renders fine. I've tried varying bit rates/WMV templates but no go at 1080p.

Using Windows task manager, I see that less than 1/2 of my RAM (2.7GB of 6GB) is ever being used during the render. BTW - .mp4 1080p renders using MainConcept AVC are fine.

Any ideas?

This problem comes up over and over again.

Check out this thread and fiddle with these settings.

I found you can get this if the Motion Blur is set to high...
24Peter wrote on 6/2/2010, 8:07 PM
Hmmm... now even the 720p renders are crashing... I tried setting the Dynamic Ram preview to 0 - no help. Any other ideas? Where do I tell Vegas how much RAM I have installed? (I have 6GB).

I'm not using any Motion Blur....

P.S. I'm also watching Minding Cameron

Any good? ;-)

So John any ideas on solving my issue?

I used the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool this morning to check to see if I had some bad RAM, but it didn't find any problems...

I too am now getting this low memory error when rendering my blu ray m2t files and hdv 1080 60i files. I have never had an issue with this computer in almost 2 years. Now I can't seem to render this file. I am now 2 days behind.
Trying the set dynamic preview to 0 and turning off preview of video to see if that helps.

How do you turn off the video preview while rendering?
L8R wrote on 6/3/2010, 7:47 AM
my question exactly Peter... I read it in another thread. I know I've seen this setting before but can't find it now...
I don't know why all of a sudden my machine is doing this. I never had issues.

L8R - Did your issues start with 9.0e? I'm in the same boat, things worked fine in 9.0c but now I have ran into this mem issue, that and vegas will not close completly.

I started this thread but got no responses:

Wow Rod, that is a long time for a 7 min project.
I haven't experienced the hanging issue.
Yes I am using 9E. This is my first HD or Blu ray render from the 9E. Everything is fine except these renders.
However I must say I have a couple of magic bullet filters in the project, I know it is render heavy but I've done it before with this computer with no hesitation... christ I even messed around on youtube while doin it.
Now, I have internet disconnected, Norton off, dynamic preview 0.
I decided to break this render into smaller chunks. At least if it fails, it's not the whole project.
Complete piss off when you get to 93, 96, 98% renders and it quits.... drives me nuts.

How do you turn off the video preview while rendering?

In Pro 8, the option (Show progress in Video Preview window while rendering) is in Options - Preferences - General.
In Pro 9, this option is gone :-(
The funny (sad?) part is that it still shows up in the online help file as well as in the Internal Prefs.

Thanks Mike for clearing that up... I spent a good 20 minutes reading every setting in the preferences tab.
The one thing that I wish you could do is still have an active frame counter so you know how things are progressing, if you chose to close the preview window.

I've sat there before waiting on a project that still showed progress in the progress bar but the program had actually stopped functioning. Confirmed this the next time I rendered using the preview window and could see that the frames were not progressing.

I'm at 72% of this render... keep your fingers crossed.

Peter, when you are rendering, keep the Windows Task Manager open while you render. See if you are 'leaking' memory. The Physical Memory should stay even, not going up. If it goes up and stays that way, it could be a poorly written application or add on.. Since we out here don't know whether you have added something to your system lately that is causing this, (even an update to Vegas for example), you are left with the task of tracking it down.

Additionally, take a look at your processes and see if something is eating up a lot of memory. Make sure that stuff is shut down that is non essential. For example, turn off the Sidebar, a useful but non essential memory pig. (10MBs on my machine, for example).

As an aside, I was getting some of these crashes like this, and found a couple of things. I had downloaded the 32 bit version of Vegas when I went to the upgrade process (Doh!).
But it's easier to do that than you might think.

After reloading the proper version of Vegas I also upgraded my RAM to 8GBs. I have done some reading that shows that 8 seems to be the magic number for 64 bit Windows. My crashes have stopped entirely. I didn't change anything else.

Anyone have a support contract with Sony and can run this by their internal tech support?

Mike,

Think I found the video preview while rendering controle.

Hold "shift" and go "Options" and then "Preferences".
Click on Internal tab

Go about 50% down the list.

There is "show progress in video preview window while rendering"
Is this the same thing?
24Peter wrote on 6/4/2010, 7:43 AM
Hey - first a big thanks to everyone who chimed in on this thread in an effort to help me. I can't say how much I appreciate that kind of support and hope I can return the favor in the future...

Now I'm happy to say my issue is resolved. In my case, I had to install the latest version of Quicktime (7.6.6). I have been previously running an older version of Quicktime Alternative (1.95 - not sure what version of Quicktime it's based on). But since the update I am able to render a couple of different projects in the WMV 11 format on two different computers without issue (the source files are .mov clips from my Canon T2i and 5DII). I can also say my timeline previews are much improved and now on the second preview pass I'm getting full 24fps playback (other than transitions. Initial preivews are between 8-18 fps).

So thanks again for all the help. I am very, very appreciative. :-)

Same problem. I have 9e, 32-bit, on XP, quad core, 3 GB Ram. I've had this problem with mpeg-2 renders also. RAM preview set to 0. Watching task manager right now during offending project. So far so good. Physical Memory Total doesn't change, but Available and system cache go up and down. And well it just crashed but I didn't see how far it got because the counter goes back to 0%. I have Quicktime 7.6.5 and can't see why that has anything to do with WMVs, but who knows?

I am going to now try turning on Network Rendering like someone in a different thread suggested. Hope Sony gets this fixed soon.

Think I found the video preview while rendering controle.

L8R, it sure is!!
Thanks very much for finding that.
I have no idea how I missed it when I was looking for it.
