Lower Bitrate on MPEG-2 file in Vegas

I'm trying to create an MPEG-2 file but it won't fit onto my disc because the file is too big and I don't want to force recompression.

I was told that I could lower the bitrate to ensure that it could fit on to the DVD, but although I can do this for MPEG-1 the custom button is greyed out when I try it on MPEG-2.

Is there any other way of lowering the bitrate in Vegas please ?

1. Are you using Vegas (Pro) or Vegas Movie Studio? I'm not sure if Vegas Movie Studio allows for customized MPEG2 settings.

2. Is your copy registered? I'm not sure if the trial version(s) allow for customized MPEG2 settings?

I can tell you, though, that a registered copy of Vegas Pro does allow for customized MPEG2 settings. So if that's what you've got, something is probably corrupted. If that's the case, try re-installing Vegas.

That said, if your file is cutting it that close to the DVD size limit, you might want to try rendering to AVI (use the NTSC DV or PAL DV template) instead and then use DVD Architect's Fit to Disc feature to let it decide on a bitrate. (Go to File > Optimize Disc to find the Fit to Disc button.)

I'm using the Vegas Movie Studio 8 version, it's fully registered and updated, so maybe it's not possible to customise. Just about all the other formats do allow customisation.

I have used the Fit To Disc with the original AVI file, but when I do this it always fails the rendering.

I can't remember what the error message is but it will start the render and then after around 10 minutes it comes up with an error message and DVD Architect shuts down.
