M-audio duo and Vegas, can't record

I have not yet been able to record at all with Vegas 4. I'm using M-Audio duo for my mic & headphone connections and pre-amps and phantom power. Only thing I have had is a recording of the chime when I turn the duo on or off. Nothing is showing on the db monitor except background noise below 48.

I also tried to record my Roland keyboard, which is directly connected to the computer, with no success. Sorry to be so clueless, and I really appreciate any help and suggestions. I do not have an external mixer board, as I will never be doing any mixing, just recording my grand piano, and some keyboard arrangements for basic editing before taking all as wav files to my studio engineer. The engineer is coming to my house tonight ($65 per hour) to set the settings on Vegas, but I need to have the thing at least working! Help please.
