m2t files and media servers

I have just bought a PS3. The only thing that I can't stream to it using Windows Media Player 11 are *.m2t files which is what I get when I render HD from my SR1 using the HDV tempaltes in Vegas. I can stream *.m2v files, but they don't have audio of course. Does anyone know what server I can use to stream *.m2t files or how to create multiplexed HD files that WMP can stream? It would also be nice to create multiplexed files with ac3 audio, but stereo seems to be the best I can get. any ideas? Thanks.

The server shouldn't care what kind of files they are. It's just a stream of bits as far as the server is concerned.

I'm going to guess that the problem is the bitrate. HD .m2t files tend to run about 25 to 30mbps. That may be more than your connection can handle. .m2v files are usually in the 5 to 8mbps range.

Change the file extension to .mpg.
I use PS3 with WMP11 for HDV files with no trouble at all. Quality is excellent with no hiccups.
PS3 will accept .m2t files on DVD-R so I suspect the naming issue is in WMP11.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply chienworks, but the server definitely cares what the files are. At this stage it's not about bitrate because the PS3 reports 'unsupported media'. But as Malcolm D points out, the files work fine off memory stick or DVD. However, once I get WMP to recognise the file type by changing the extension, then the bitrate across the wireless network becomes a problem. My solution right now is to change the extension then copy the files across the wireless network and play them from the PS3. It's probably slightly more convenient than using a DVD or memory stick to transport them, but if I were to do that, I don't need to change the file extension. 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other really. Thanks for your help.

Hi,
I also have a PS3, I noticed that on the lastest firmware update they have a streaming media feature now (previous firmware's did not). Can you post what Operating System your using? Does one need to run XP Media Center edition or can XP_SP2 do this if WMP 11 is installed.

At present I'll either use all the media selections available to the PS3, usually an external USB Fat32 harddisk for all the HighDef Videos or dvd's.
Right now I can access my servers and only download/transfer the video(s), mpg/.m2t to the PS3's internal harddisk.
I do have other HD hardware players that can play the hd-mpeg2 streams, on a hardwired gigabit network so far the highest reliable bit-rate for smooth playback has been 18000kbs_VBR, the 25000kbs_CBR chokes & studders after about 15 seconds.

Rather than transferring via the network to the PS3's internal harddisk if you have an external usb drive the PS3 will play them directly from the usb harddisk.
You hit the triangle key and select "Show All" to see all the directories on the usb drive or put your videos on any media into a folder called \VIDEO
Highlight a video & hitting the triangle key will display "Options" and you can transfer the video(s) from the drive to the PS3's internal harddisk.

I haven't been able to stream video to it like you posted you have been doing.

WMP does not recognize .m2t file extensions. As mentioned earlier, renaming to .mpg is a work around. However, Wireless networks are good for 25 Mbit/s streaming. Best I have managed to achieve is in the +- 8 Mbit/s range. I have since installed a wired 100BaseT Ethernet connection - this helps a lot. I use TMPENC's MPEG tool to create a .mpg file with video and AC-3 audio. Haven't tested this on a PS-3. I usually just render to .wmv with 5.1 audio from Vegas for streaming to the XBOX360. Unfortunately, the XBOX 360 firmware update for H.264 does not support 5.1 or I would use that instead.
