M2T files -vs- MPG

If I change the extension of a M2T file to MPG my players don't seem to care. Do you suppose services like Vimeo care? The uploader , won't accept M2T files but they will take MPGs....though will they crash and burn during conversion? And would the quality hold up better than the recommended MP4 files and settings?

I see many wonderful looking HD videos on Vimeo but when I convert mine to the settings they suggest, they flicker a bit and look fuzzy.
