M2T > Sony MXF

JHendrix wrote on 1/21/2010, 10:27 AM
Im having some issues with mixed format timeline crashing.

(i have cineform but am trying to avoid using it)

If I convert my M2T to:

Sony MXF 50 CBR 422 will I maintain good quality?

any idea what setting to use in the Vegas render dialog?

edit:

i just noticed that 1440x1080 only goes up to 35VBR HQ - will that be good enough?

is there any other option than cineform or using proxys to convert this HDV?

I've done some testing doing the following - Taken an m2t clip from my HC7's and transcoded the same clip to the following:

Canopus HQ AVI
Cineform Neo Scene AVI
DNxHD MOV
MXF 422 50mbps

Looking at overall image quality and specifically, edge detail, my conclusion is the MXF's were visually the best looking and actually required less overhead system wise - both in CPU and HD space.

Thank You

Sony MXF 50 CBR 422 can not be used if the source is 1440x1080

i noticed that 1440x1080 only goes up to 35VBR HQ - that will not be nearly as good as MXF 422 50mbps?

It will be better than what you've got.

That's true 1440x1080 isn't an option, so I went 1920x1080

I used Proxy Stream to convert a folder of m2t's into MXF's - it worked perfect - I'm about to test on my laptop and if I like what I see, I may be coming back to Vegas due to how smoothly MXF's work in Vegas. Cineform is a wash for me - it's not been reliable enough for me to depend on. I finished my last project in Edius Neo 2 after having VP9 choke on me while using Cineform Neo Scene AVI's and have to say the editing was rock solid, but it wasn't as easy as editing in Vegas. I had to transcode all my files to Canopus HQ - MUCH larger than both MXF or Cineform AVI's.

Please let us know your results, I just did a 1440 test render and it look pretty good...I guess I will have to try choosing 1920 and see how that looks.
