Is there a way to import audio files with a .m4a extention?

If that's the case, you'll need to install QuickTime (version 6.4 was just released), it's a free download from the Apple web site. Do a custom install, and select everything. You should be able to read these files from Vegas 4. I've been able to read media files with an MPEG-4 video stream and an MPEG-4 audio stream just fine.
