Magic Bullet Looks 2.0.6

redpaw wrote on 2/1/2012, 7:39 AM
Yesterday they released a new version - 2.0.6 - even tho it doesnt bring anything new to the vegas users ("This update includes support for Final Cut Pro X.") - i had a look at their page and noticed the pre-previous one 2.0.4 from December 2011 that i missed, and from unsuccessful searching the forum for any mention of it, probably few other people missed it as well.
"This update includes an OMP error fix for Sony Vegas users."

here's the link to the page with the updates: the 2.0.5 is the newest version for windows machines at the moment, as 2.0.6 is for mac only -

Just tried the update and unfortunately the external monitor output levels from within the MB Looks interface (using a Black Magic Intensity card) card are still messed up. They seem to add an extra 7.5 IRE which does not appear on the final render or when viewing to the external monitor directly from Vegas. But if you are within the MB Looks interface and preview to the external monitor the picture looks washed out. This makes accurate color / level grading very difficult.

Reported this to Red Giant last year and they told me to update my Black Magic drivers which did not help.

Something must be seriously screwed up with the internal Vegas levels processing because Cineform also has similar issues which they have never been able to fix and Sony gives me the run around whenever I've tried to get these issues addressed.

Marc, I have a black magic intensity shuttle and haven't noticed the 7.5 setup issue you mention. My recollection is that vegas preview and looks preview matched.

However, if you use looks preview it will guarantee a vegas crash soon after. Sooner if you don't turn off the preview in looks before returning to vegas. Turning it off first seems to delay the crash for a while.

Rocky,

I neglected to mention that I'm using the component outputs to my Sony pro SD monitor. Are you using the HDMI by any chance?

"the 2.0.5 is the newest version for windows machines at the moment, as 2.0.6 is for mac only"..

if you download and install 2.0.5 and you have internet enabled, you get a popup asking if you want to update to 2.0.6. I just did this and sure enough, it shows as 2.0.6. But i dont see a download link for it yet, just the internet update after 2.0.5 is installed. Maybe its too new. (at this time).

Did anyone else use this update and then find some preset looks were no longer there? Specifically, I no longer have Popular TV and Popular Film looks after upgrading to 2.0.6. The folder is still there, but it is empty.

Sorry, I keep changing my post here, finding things out as i go.

popular film looks, gone on main workstation, ok on laptop.
popular TV looks, yep thats there on both.
Horror, gone on workstation, ok on laptop.

Did not check every single one, but some do seem to be missing on closer inspection.

This is odd!

Paul. Thanks for confirming that I'm not losing my mind - at least as far as this issue is concerned.

On my closer inspection, it seems as though some have been "moved" to "Classic Popular TV". Problem is, I didn't use the presets enough to have memorized all that were there. Thus, I can't tell if all have moved or if some are now just not available. I put a ticket in with Magic Bullet.
paul_w wrote on 2/6/2012, 8:28 AM
Jason, i was also thinking maybe they just shifted some presets into other catagories. Its a bit confusing, i can't remember where they were either. Keep us posted if you get an answer!.
But what i really dont get is, my laptop shows different presets to my workstation - whats that all about? :)
Did you find a location for the presets in a folder? i have been looking but could not find it yet.

Paul - I'm not at my editing station right now, but I recall the finding the presets folder inside the Magic Bullet Looks folder in the Programs (x86) folder.

I'll let you know if I get an answer from MB. Since my custom looks were still there, I wasn't too worried about it. However, I wanted to make an official complaint to MB, since I find the moving of presets (or removal) to be at least unneccessarily irritating.

Here's the reply I received from Red Giant: "You may just need to do a simply re-install of the product." It also gave instructions - basically, download and install, as if fresh.

This did not solve the problem. I'm reporting back to Red Giant.

If there is anyone using MBLooks 2.0, who has not installed the 2.0.5 or 2.0.6 update, could you please post what looks are in the "Horror" (for example) presets and a list of the preset groups. Here are my preset groups (I put <empty> beside the ones that now have no presets):

Custom
Basic
Cinematic
Diffusion and Light
Monochromatic
Stylized
People
Classic Music Videos
Classic Popular TV
Classic Stock Emulation
Black and White Tints <empty>
Diffusion <empty>
Horror <empty>
Music Videos <empty>
Popular Film <empty>
Popular TV <empty>
Special Effects <empty>
Stock Emulation <empty>
Tints <empty>

I'm sure that "Special Effects" had a number of presets before the upgrade, but don't find anything similar after. Also,I thought there were more under "People" and there are now only 6.

I wonder if I had installed QuickLooks before and it picked up those looks, even though they only worked in 32bit. Question is, why were they then deleted?

In v2.0.4 ONLY the non-empty presets exist.

The now-empty presets were from QuickLooks or MBL1.x.

The new preset categories in MBL2.0 include most of the useful looks from QL/MBL1.0 AND have been re-written to make use of MBL2.0's new tools.

I suspect the 2.0.5 installer deleted these legacy looks, although you could probably restore them by reinstalling QL/MB1.0.

Simon Walker has many good tutorials on Looks and the new 2.0 tools.

Best regards,
Brandon

"The now-empty presets were from QuickLooks or MBL1.x"..

That makes sense. My laptop once had a trial version from ages ago and thats why the presets are showing up.

So my laptop still has these v1 presets, like Horror. Is there any point listing these or exporting the presets in some way?. Maybe not if these are already included in v2.

JasonATL, i just checked my presets - (in 2.0.5) , and i've got no empty folders.
Got 5 presets in Horror, 8 in B&W tints and so on... doesnt look like i'm missing anything.

FWIW dont have / never had QuickLooks instaled
brandonb wrote on 2/7/2012, 10:48 PM
I wouldn't use the old QL/MB1 presets for new projects, but you might want to keep them if they were used extensively in older projects.

Once the old presets were deleted (I had them from QL) the past projects that used them no longer had a look applied. Granted this was only 1 or 2 test projects, so I wasn't concerned enough to keep the old looks presets.
JasonATL wrote on 2/8/2012, 7:10 AM
I received a reply from Red Giand that included a zip file of the missing presets.

For me, the issue isn't just missing the presets, since I don't recall ever just applying a preset without altering it. Rather, I expressed in my prior response to them that I was disappointed that the updater removed presets without any warning. This could cause an issue for someone who has an active project that used/relied on those presets.

I'm not trying to slam Red Giant here. I really like MB Looks and find it much easier and more powerful to use in color correcting and grading than the Sony tools.

Good to hear RG provided a helpful response.

Agree with you on MBL's usefulness. Excellent render & real-time playback performance inside 32b VP11 424 (I'm using an Nvidia GPU + 8 core I7). Has been very stable as well, although I'm not using external monitoring.
paul_w wrote on 2/8/2012, 11:46 AM
Jason, do you have the location of the preset folder, maybe let us know where it is?
Still have the presets on the laptop so could copy those over to workstation if needed. Glad they supplied you with the .zip of the old presets.

Edit: Ah its ok, found it on the laptop, was not present on the workstation! Thats why i could not see it anywhere.

Makes sense. It must only affect the analog outputs. Thanks.
