Mainconcept MPEG won't work for me

Everytime I try rendering using the Mainconcept plugin, I get an "illegal instruction" in module MPGVOUT.004 error.

Does this happen to anyone else?

I get a similar "illegal instruction" error with some versions of DIVX 4. With DIVX, it turns out the codec is trying to use SSE instructions on my SSE-less K6-III+. I don't know if this is the case with the MainConcept codec (I'm not good at x86 assembly language so I've not been able to decipher the stack dump yet).

Same thing with Vegas 3, It crashes as soon as I try to render using a MainConcept plugin, also "illegal instruction" in module MPGVOUT.004.

I have an AMD K6-2+ 550 (similar to K6-III+).

It doesn't sound good... any chance to get it working?

I'm now certain its due to the fact that Mainconcept is using instructions that aren't supported on the K6. I'm certain because I recently updated to an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ and the MPEG plugin works just fine (the only things I changed were the MB, RAM and CPU).

Sonic Foundry was receptive in the past to fixing K6 related bugs, but the MPEG plugin is made by a different company.

too bad! I guess I would have to encode in avi and then in mpeg-2 with tmpgenc.

Is there any AVI codec better than uncompressed (which takes less size on the hd), with good quality and nice encoding speed too?

Have you tried DV? It's VideoFactory's "native tongue", so renders are quite fast. The files are about 1/5 the size of uncompressed.

thanks for the tips!
