MAJOR vv5 BUG: BMP images crash vv5

repeating:I see no need to send you a .veg project as just putting one BMP in a project is all that is required. If you really really really trhink you need it, OK. I'll send it, Who do I send it to?

I think the above items (in the previous couple messages) should get you into the area of the problem. If necessary, do what we have done when a couple customers of our software have had a strange problem: take a few minutes and throw a bunch of debug statements (or a debug log) into that part ofthe code so you can get data from each step of the opening with a BMP to help narrow down and hopefully find the cause of the problem. I don't mind downloading a special debug version and then sending you the debug log ,.... or doing an OK to debug message boxes and noting the last message box before the crash. there's something different in teh code between vv4 and vv5 as vv4 doesn't have the problem but vv5 does.

Lajko,

I understand your frustration, and I want to help solve this problem. I've tried and tried to get this crash to happen on my Win2K SP4 machine but it just isn't happening for me. I've looked at the crash dump you posted (thank you very much!), compared it to our mapfile here, but it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me why it is crashing where it is crashing in Vegas for you.

Perhaps some more details about your system might get us further along for reproducing this problem:

1. What version of DirectX do you have installed? (Start | Run | dxdiag will tell this)

2. Have you customized the Vegas layout in any way? If so, what have you changed?

3. What video card do you have? Driver version?

4. Have you tried lowering video acceleration? (believe it or not, video driver issues can cause all sorts of strange crashes) Control Panel | Display | Settings | Advanced and look around the various tabs for a hardware acceleration slider.

5. Are you running a non-English version of Win2K? If yes, what language are you using?

In further testing, I found a small application with small BMPS would reopen - ONLY if I did have Vegas automatically reopen the last project. If it tried to automatically reopen, crash. The bigger or more files the more unstable it becomes. It doesn't take much, but there is a fine line where you can manually open a project and it will not automatically reopen, then a point where none of the projects with a BMP would reopen. as said, bigger or more files.

The other strange thing someone else reported was removing the file extension. It really does make it work - all of the time. No crash at all! Even with automatically reopening the last project and with a 1.4meg BMP file! It would be interesting to trace the code and see what is different when there is a file extension .vs. no extension. While vegas does not see the file in the explorer, you can drag it to the project from Windows explorer. Maybe a thread is attempting to process the file before it gets opened but with no extension, it has to be opened first to determine the file format before it can be processed. So the timing between threads would be different. Just a thought - buit this should be a breakthrough in finding the exact spot of the crash. maybe you can add a special debug log that shows when you get the crash or is saved to a file. A project with one BMP that crashes should be easy to trace. Also noting the difference between manually opening a project that does open and a log when automatically opening it and it crashes would be a nice comparison.

I am beginning to guess it is all thread related and threads getting out of sync or not waiting for completion. One other strange aspect is sometimes it would finish displaying the images in the tracks before the crash, sometimes the crash comes right away before the track(s) is(are) displayed.

No changes have been made to teh Vegas setup. No customization.

I know this is a real overkill, but here is everything about the system:

If you disconnect the 1394 drives (and any others that are easily disconnected) can you open projects? Just a thought- 11 drives of mixed type...could be related to that.

If you could provide a list of the Sonic Foundry and Sony products you have installed (including versions) this might get us closer to a solution as well. You can email a project file to: icalderon at sonypictures dot com. (obfuscated email addy)

Thanks

There are only 4 physical drves: 2 internal and 2 external. Wirth all of the testing done so far, it is pretty clear that a hard drive would not be the cause. (Even though it still happens with the external drives disconnected.)

I and others have gone through extensive work to isolate and identify the problem. Previously there has been a great deal of detail on the problem - which includes unplugging everything and even running "EnditAll". Too many things point to a problem in one small area of vv5. Everything points to a vv5 issue and a difference between vv5 and vv4 source code in one small area of the code.

There are so many clues as to where the problem would be in the code that it needs to be discossed with the programmers rather than tech support. A couple properly places trac statements should be able to track down the error rather quickly. Where ever that spot is, it would be possible to fix it and if it deals with vv5 dalling external apps in a different way than vv4, it would be possible to corect that, too. The biggest clue is the absence of a file extension. That is where the programmers should look first as that does make it flip between working or not working 100% of the time. I would also look at the record alignment issue, as any change in the compiler version or installed components could change default settings and make communication with a 3rd party OCX or DLL a little unstable and could vary with the version or brand of a particular OCX or DLL on the installed computer.

Being in this industry myself (bowling league and tournament software along with kiosk software) and having a tech support and programming staff, I am aware of the detective work required to track down obscure problems which goes beyond basic tech support. That is experience, like being a Sherlock Holmes, which is different than programming skills.

Others are reporting the same problem and some have reported work-arounds. I applaud your errorts, but feel it is time for the programmers to get involved. I don't have time to play around with this anymore in the "plus-in this", "un-plug this", "reinstall this" mode when there are so many clues as to the exact spot in the code that needs to be examined. The band-aids of renaming files doesn't remove the problem and leaves it open to having more hidden errors in the same place.

I'll let the other users deal with it for now while I stay with vv4. I have to complete many software upgrades in the bowling software and kiosks before the bowling trade show in Vegas June 30. Plus I have a number of sample videos to make for the kiosks. So I need to get back to work. I'll watch the board and the update-download-area for a solution and will offer assistance to the programmers in fixing this, should they decide to take a look at this issue.

Lakjo,

First, I want to assure you that programmers HAVE been looking into this (I'm one of them). Second, it may well be a threading issue; however, since we haven't yet been able to reproduce this here we can't just throw changes at the code in the hopes it will fix a particular problem.

You're a programmer, I'm sure you realize that it is very important to reproduce a problem in order to understand WHY the crash is happening and to fix the application in the best way possible without destabilizing it for other users. Honestly, even with your crash dump there really aren't all that many clues where the problem is in the code. The file extension has nothing to do with it (when you change the filename, Vegas just can't find the file anymore, that's all, so it prompts you for it). The byte alignment probably doesn't have anything to do with it either (else you'd crash when loading your BMP files directly into the timeline).

From what I can tell from your crash dump, the memory for the track list hasn't yet been allocated when the track events are being populated with the BMP media. Why not? I don't know, it sure shouldn't be NULL at that point in the Vegas load project setup. (BTW, this is why I asked question #2, below, which you did not answer)

What we haven't yet found is the commonality between you and the few other users who are experiencing this same problem. That is why we keep asking for your system information, installed programs, external devices you have connected, and so on. Since there are so few of you who have reported this BMP crash problem, it seems to me it is either a hardware or installed application conflict that is causing this particular problem.

So, questions for you and anyone else who is having this problem (Lajko, you've already answered #1):

1. What version of DirectX do you have installed? (Start | Run | dxdiag will tell this)

2. Have you customized the Vegas layout in any way? If so, what have you changed?

3. What video card do you have? Driver version?

4. Have you tried lowering video acceleration? Use Control Panel | Display | Settings | Advanced and look around the various tabs for a hardware acceleration slider, try dropping it down to the next lower setting.

5. Are you running a non-English version of Win2K? If yes, what language are you using?

6) Right click on a bmp file- what is it set to open with by default?

7) What app (+ version) are you using to create the problem stills? Is this app on the Vegas machine?

8) What video plug-ins for Vegas do you have installed (list)

thanks-

SonyTSW:

BMPs are made with: Phoitoshop 6; direct from digital camera; ThumbsPlus and possibly others. Source of BMP makes no difference. I ruled that out quite early - including loading images from various sources and sized onto PS6 and saving as indexed color and RGB. Same images are fine in vv4.

Questions 1,3,5 answered in the directX diag. dump previously posted. But briefly:
(1) 90b directX
(2) Previously mentioned no customization of vv5 at all. Only option changed/toggled was automatically open last project.
(3) Perhalia 128k, version in the dump
(4) yes, made no difference.
(5) Speak Seattle version of English, with an occasional "eh?" since BC is so close to Seattle.
(6) Default app is Photoshop 6.
(7) listed above
(8) Spicemaster, Spicemaster2, Plug&Pack, ((Graffitti, Boris FX. Boris products installed in vv4, but are not recognized by vv5 until I copy shared components into vv5 ))

As for file extension, I believe this is a good place to start tracing. a 1.4meg photo with extension of BMP was dragged into the timeline from Windows explorer. Project closed; vv5 closed; vv5 opened; try opening project and it wouldn't open.

Now here is where the file extension part gets interesting: Renamed the photo by removing the extension. No attempt was made to re-open the previous project. Opened vv5. New project. From Windows explorer, I dragged the extensionless filename into the timeline. This is the only way to get it there as without the extension, it does not show in the explorer in vv5. The file WITHOUT ANY EXTENSION was dropped onto the timeline into a new (and the only) track in the new project. Without the extension, vv5 determined the filetype by reading the header and displayed it correctly. Now I closed this project. Closed vv5. Reopened vv5. Tried to reopen the project with one 1.4meg photo with no file extension and it opened correctly.

I think you though I renamed the file after creating the project. I removed the extension then added it to the project. It makes sense that vv5 would recognize the file by reading the header. We use ImageEngine in Delphi for our bowling and kiosk software. ImageEngine has the option of being told what type of file or it can determine the file type automatically based on the file extension or by the header of the file if there is no extension.

This reading of the file to determine the type when reopening the project may be enough of a time delay for the various threads/processes to fall into place in the proper sequence. Some kind of log or even a listbox listing the sequence of things might give enough info if I were to run it and send the info to you for the works and the crashes methods.

We, too, hit problems unique to a customer that we can't reproduce. We have a few secret key combinations that turn on some debug info or a diagnostic screen. Probably you have a few of these already hidden in vv5. We had a nighmare trying to clean up our kiosk core application. It runs 2 screens with slides & transitions plus videos in the ad sequence. Main app + thread for each screen. They watch for new files to update data for the other applications, new ads, new ad list, scrolling messages plus times scrolling of lane assignments for leagues and tournaments. Tricky to interrupt processes mid-effect to update things or even reliably shit down all processes. Only one Dell with nVidia had the problems out of all the systems we have out there. Fortunately I got that system in the office and really fine tuned the threads and timing to where it runs for weeks - non stop - with no memory leaks or crashes. and that includes user interaction on the main screen, all the automatic updates from the automatic scoring system, and continuous ads on the 2nd screen.

So I'm willing to work with you on this one. Others are having the same or similar problems (though they are opting for work-arounds like switching to PNG). If you drop in some debug hooks, I'll run it and report back.

SonyTSW wrote on 5/23/2004, 9:34 PM
Lajko,

Thanks for the additional information about how you renamed your files. Yes, there is a slightly different code path when file types are identified by a known supported extension (this is always validated by reading header bytes too) vs. unknown/missing extension. So that is a clue for us.

Sorry, no debugging hooks available.

What is "Plug&Pack"? Is this Satish's PluginPac? If so, what version?

p.s. If you set the media explorer View to "All Files", you'll see those files that don't have extensions.

Hello

Yes, I have the same problem at time to open a project created and saved in Vegas 5.0.

The project has inclued files with extensions *.BMP, *.AVI. *.TXT, *.JPG, *.FLASH, *.MP3. The project has many crossfades, texts, motions 3D planar, backgrounds, etc.

When I want to open the project show the next text:

The programmers would release a Plug-In or ejecutable (*.exe) of small size to fix the BIG problem.

Thanks

So far we still cannot reproduce the problem here.

Can you please give us some more information about your system? (see list of questions I asked above).

It may help us to reproduce this problem if you tell us what third-party plug-ins you have installed (video plug-ins, Satish's PluginPac frameserver, etc.), what video FX you are using in your project, whether you are running any anti-virus software, and so on. It looks like there is some sort of stack corruption or threading issue, but we really need to replicate this problem here so we can figure out what's causing it.

One thing to try is to turn OFF the general preference "Draw waveforms and frames in events" before loading your project. Does your project load now? Please let us know if this works (you'll probably want to turn the pref back on to work on your project).
