Making a strip line and animate a caption

Hi,

Tried the search but the keywords were too broad..so here I am :)

I'm just trying to make a simple little line strip at the bottom on the screen. I choose a media generation (red) pop it on the timeline, went into track motion and trying to adjust the height and width...I think this is the right way to do this, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to move the width without moving the height, or vise-versa.

What am I doing wrong?

Q2: Any idea on how I can make a animated caption. I want to create a pop up text saying "I have an idea" just above the subject's head and I want it animated, meaning the words wobble a bit, like a kid's writing. I see this often in PBS (A kids program channel) where the words PDS kids wiggle a bit. Can this be easily accomplished in vegas?

Thanks again..and a round of chocolates to everyone!

You can probably do this in track motion, but personally I'd do it in pan/crop on your red event. In the pan/crop window, make sure you have the "Lock Aspect Ratio" button turned off... this will prevent width & height from adjusting simultaneously. There is a property named "Stretch to fill frame" which you should set to "No". Now you should be able to adjust the width, height, and positioning of your red media.

Regarding your second question... which version of Vegas are you using? If you have a version that includes the new ProType titler, you could use that. Otherwise, depending on how detailed/complex you want your wobble, you can probably achieve this effect using normal text and keyframing with either pan/crop or track motion.

Q2: I have V7.0, but if this option is in V8, I'm in like a dirty shirt.

Thanks!

ProType is in Vegas 8.

At any rate, for what you want, I think you'd be better off creating the "wobbly" text in Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or some other image editing app. Create your text, save that as one image. Fudge around with it -- move it slightly, maybe warp some of it -- save that as another image. Do this one or two more times so you have a few "frames." Name all of these images in a sequence (eg, idea01.png, idea02.png, etc).

Then, in Vegas, go to File -> Import -> Media. Select the first image in the sequence, check the box at the bottom marked "Open still image sequence" and click OK. This adds an item to your project's media. Drag it onto the timeline and then drag the edge of that event to loop it as many times as you need. (It's going to be very small, so you'll probably need to zoom in on the timeline a bit.)

The wobble text could be done in Bluff Titler and brought into your Vegas project. Very easy.

check out the "vegas quake" script as well - will do everything from a slight wobble to edgy, shaking text.
