Auto-ripple. It's an icon in your toolbar.

As suggested by musicvid, turn on "auto-ripple" (Ctrl+L).
But you can't just drag event D and drop it after event A with "auto-ripple" on. Event E will come with it..

Select event D. I assume event D's associated audio is grouped with the video.
Do Ctrl-X (for cut). Auto-ripple will close the gap between C & E.
Place the timeline cursor at the end of event A.
Do Ctrl-V for paste.
Vegas will insert the event at that point and move everything else to the right.
Done.
Knowing when and when not to use Auto-ripple and how it works is important.
There are many other ways to accomplish this task.

right click on event D. Drag it to end of event A. Let go and choose 'shuffle events' from the drop down menu.
