Markers - Cutting & Pasting possible?

gordonmcdowell wrote on 12/1/2009, 9:30 AM
When re-ordering chunks of video, I'd normally use cut & paste... Cut the video and paste it in, in new location it is needed.

Markers can't seem to be cut along with the video.

So as a work-around I'm sliding video around... making huge gaps so I can slide video into place without overlapping, as I can at least slide markers if not cut/paste them.

What is the correct approach to reordering video sequences?

Thanks,
-Gord

If that workflow works for you, work with it.
There are many ways to do things in Vegas.
Excalibur or Ultimate S are handy for moving stuff around the timeline, re-ordering as you put it.
Cutting/paste from different instances in Vegas is also a plus.
I guess you can't do that in some other NLEs.
Right now I can't render HD footage in Vegas.
So I guess it has it's strengths and weeknesses.

There isn't any "correct" approach; different situations call for different measures.

One way to re-order is to move clips (events) to a new track as you rearrange them. If you copy clips from the old track to the new you'll have both a record of how things were and the new structure as well.

I often work this way when editing materials from film transfer. I can preserve the original track, with time code, and create a new sequence without losing reference to a client's edit decision list based on the original track's time code.

If you want markers to move with media use media markers. Covered in the manual. When finished editing you can promote media markers to timeline markers.

Hey folks maybe I'm not being clear here. (Except that is sounds like Excalibur or Ultimate S may be of use, so thanks Dan for that suggestion.)

JackW's suggestion is a reasonable approach to making editing decisions in the first place. I can re-sequence video, my problem is strictly with the Markers, and the fact I can't seem to cut/paste them like the other contents of the timeline.

It seems like being able to select Media Markers when selecting clips would be an appropriate way for the timeline editor to work. Even copy/paste... should duplicate the markers.

If I was going thru the project after I was done ALL my editing (except minor trimming), and adding markers, I wouldn't be frustrated. But this seems like an oversight, unless I'm misunderstanding something fundamental about markers and what their purpose might be.

Or you can use nested projects, their markers show up like media markers. Often I set out a live event like this, then make a master project to select/rearrange bits of it at will. That way, no need to hack intricate stuff (markers, envelopes..) around in time.

Hi Gordon.

I'm re-working on getting a work flow going after a bit of an absence from Vegas - and in reading this thread I am trying to understand what you are asking.

1st post you say - "Markers can't seem to be cut along with the video. So as a work-around I'm sliding video around... making huge gaps so I can slide video into place without overlapping, as I can at least slide markers if not cut/paste them. What is the correct approach to reordering video sequences?"

The last post said " my problem is strictly with the Markers, and the fact I can't seem to cut/paste them like the other contents of the timeline. ven copy/paste... should duplicate the markers."

I looked at .veg I am working on now and I have several events on the timeline with media markers in the event inserted via trimmer window. (At least that is what I think I have). When I copy and paste the event elsewhere on the timeline, the markers get copied. Are you saying a copy and paste is not working that way on your timeline ?

Vegas has two kinds of markers.
Timeline markers which are attached to the timeline and stored in the project file, not the events on the timeline. Imagine a scenario where you have several tracks of video and timeline markers. Clearly if you move an event there's no way for Vegas to know if the timeline marker should move or not.

Media Markers which are attached to the media and stored in a file attached to the media. These will move with the media, anytime you add the media to a project or move it around in the project they will move with it. Adding these is pretty simple. RClick the event and select Open In Trimmer, press M, add description if desired, click the floppy disk icon to save and there is your marker in the event on the timeline.

I hope I'm answering your question and if so I hope this helps. It took me years to realise the power of media markers. Well if I recall correctly they were a feature that was added after V4 when I started using Vegas.
