Mask Generator Question

So shouldnt the Mask Generator when set to Luminance simple leave whatever is Luminating ?

I have a clip, people in the front, black background. Want something to show behind them ( i.e. the clip below ). When I apply the Mask Generator/Luminance it does show through ( some ) but turns the clip black and white.

Anyone ?

The mask generator creates an actual mask (masks are B&W or greyscale) based on the image you've dropped it onto. See the example in Vegas' help section, and it's pretty clear that, based on the options you choose, part of the event will be black, and part will be transparent.

If your original background is solid black (or near solid black), would it be simpler to use the chroma keyer?

Just not grasping this entirely, but I did dig through and did some more tinkering. So.

Layer 1 Mask Layer ( Original Footage Grayscale and Tweaked )
Layer 2 Child Layer ( Original Footage )
Layer 3 Background Layer

More by chance I'm sure than anything, I managed to get this working. But for all of my tweaking and adjusting layer 2 is coming out brighter and washed out.

And the reason I'm trying to using masking instead of Chroma is that its a night shot and even with adjusting, Chroma is grabbing shadows more than if I grayscale and tweak the footage. Less spillage.

Thanks for the feedback and please do let me know if there are any other suggestions.
