Masking problems - Sony Vegas Pro 14.0 Trial version

Hi, I've just started using Sony Vegas Pro today (the free trial version of Vegas Pro 14.0) and am trying to erase the background from a clip, but it's not working. I know I successfully cut out/outlined the section I want to keep because the background has gone darker in the Pan/Crop window. I've ticked the Mask box in the bottom left corner of Pan/Crop, but when I play the video in the main Preview window the background is still showing. Do you know what I can do to get rid of it? Or is masking not available in the trial version of Sony Vegas? Any help is much appreciated :)

Can you post a few screen shots of what you are trying to do? (Note that the forum allows you to upload your screen shots directly without having to upload them to a third-party website.)
