Er..... what part of the world are you from? I seem to recall you are from Australia? If so... then you ARE in PAL land. Not NTSC.

Certainly if you have 25fps video... then that is pretty much guaranteed to be PAL. So that's what you should be using.

USA = NTSC

I'm beginning to wonder if you are maybe playing a joke on us? It would be quite funny actually.

Some of your posts have been borderline "weird" (in my opinion) and either comes from someone who is genuinely new to all this and cannot be bothered to read even the barest of information that is available anywhere - or someone who is just having a nice time playing with us. I can't decide which one you are.

Almost certainly you don't want that - set it to 48kHz, 16-bit linear, stereo mode for future use.

Because you say it is recording at 32kHz.

DV cameras record audio in one of two modes:

1. 16-bit (linear), 48kHz, stereo.
2. 12-bit (non-linear), 32kHz, 4 channel.

The only advantage of the second mode is that it can record 4 channels of audio simultaneously. The disadvantage is that to do this it must use a reduced sampling rate and a reduced bit-depth, both of which compromise the quality. The further disadvantage is that most video capturing software cannot capture the third and fourth channels even if you do use the reduced quality 4-channel mode. Vegas can't capture the extra channels and I'm not aware of any other software that can, with the single exception of Scenalyzer Live.

If your camera is set to use the first mode (almost certainly the mode you want to be using) you will see the audio shown as 48000Hz 16-bit stereo. If you are using the second mode (which you almost certainly don't want to be) then Vegas will capture only the first two channels and will expand the non-linear 12-bit audio to 16-bit linear audio so you will see the audio shown as 32000Hz 16-bit stereo. This is what you are seeing so I deduce that you have your camera set to the second of these two audio modes. And I reiterate that you (almost certainly) don't want to do that.

That's a really important observation to make about the audio bit rate there...Many thanks for that subtle difference...I'll ensure I have the audio set to 16 at 48khz from now on...

No games are being played...I am genuinely seeking assistance all the time. Whilst I do admit that some of my posts have been clearly lacking in prior research and sensibility, I really do believe that learning from others' experience with VEGAS and their shared key learnings is a critical part of accelerated learning this complex software. Manuals are good for learning the fundamentals but often different people view the same thing differnetly and hence will attack things from different angles..no manual would ever hope to capture everbody's differnt way of looking at things.. Maybe someone should compile documentaiton of all your (whole Forum) experiences and ways of doing things in VEGAS for Newbies like myself who has just begun the scary journey of video editing....?

Go to the VASST web site and get the Intro to Vegas 5 training DVD for only $39.99 USD. It will take you from the basic through everything you need to know to get productive very, very quickly. It’s in NTSC format but you should be able to play it on your PC (which is where you want to play it anyway so you can work along with it.)

As for questions about your intentions: There have been some unwanted trolls on this forum and that’s why people are suspicious. I don’t think anyone means to offend. It’s just that newbe’s to video editing usually don’t start with a $500 piece of software so it’s odd to have someone ask questions that are so basic. That’s why they were suspicious.

It is also very unfortunate that to become a video editor you must first become somewhat of an electrical engineer understand field order, scan lines, NTSC vs PAL, etc. IMHO, editing video requires too much knowledge of things that happened over 50 years ago at the birth of television and it continues to drag this baggage along to this day. Let’s hope HD TV changes all that.

It's quite possible that you do have your camera set to 16/48K. If so but Vegas is capturing the audio as 16/32K then it wouldn't be the first time. This possibly may only be an issue with PAL. if you can check that out and get back to us you might help others (namely ME!).
