MATROX VFW codecs

I foundthis on the Vegas Studio forum, and was curious if anyone was using this as an intermediate.

Apparently you can now download the Matrox VFW codecs for Windows for free. They allow playback and encoding.

http://www.matrox.com/video/en/support/windows/vfw_software_codecs/downloads/softwares/version1.0/

There are also a DVCpro 25, DVCpro50 and DVCpro HD codecs included.

I am playing a bit with it now, but wanted to see what others thought. Are these useful? Is MPEG wrapped in an AVI worthwhile for an intermediate?

DVCPRO50 is an excellent codec for SD, near-Digibeta quality at only twice the bit rate and disk storage need of DV25..

DVCPROHD - not so much. It is very easy on the CPU and disk, but it doesn't hold up if you do a lot of compositing and effects, and it's not full HD raster either.

i was very happy when i found out they give 32bits and 64bits codecs for free, including the mpeg2 i-frame.

but when i tested, it crashed half of the programs i use, some give error when selecting codec, and when it worked, it make any program that use VFW codecs open slower.

i remember wen my boss had a Rt2000, and was absolutely s**t. crash and crash, error and errors, was more a joke than a "pro" hardware.

looks like they don't changed too much since then.

im still using Canopus HQ in vegas. very flexible and stable. hope they release a 64-bit version soon (some said edius 6 will be 64bits also)

I've always found the codeces to be awesome but found the hardware to be annoying as heck. :D

They've been free for at least 8 years, that's when I got them for free.

There as another thread about these codecs not long ago. Several of us who tried them to produce an intermediate file got audio, but no video. They appear to be tied to the Matrox hardware. You should read that thread.

Thanks all. The link in that other thread are a different download. The download I did yesterday as 10 meg, that link is only 6 megs.

I rendered to almost all of the codecs last night using Vegas and they all worked fine. This was on my slower computer, but they seemed very stable.

Check out the link in the old thread and the link I provided. There is different information accompanying them on the pages and a different download.

Thanks,

The edit systems at work are all cs2/axio systems so i've needed matrix vfw codecs to see the footage i. Vegas. I've never had problems with their codecs but vegas decodes levels in that media differently than the same shot captured as dv.

Dave,

The codecs are excellent and work fine. I've been using them for half a year. The I-Frame around 100Mbps should work for most things, push it to 220Mbps and it looks lossless. Push it to 300mbps and it is lossless for the most part.

Enjoy.
