Max numer of dropped per video capture allowed

What is the maximum amount of dropped frames over a give time is accatable is 2 frames lost per ten minutes OK. I ma capturing on a laptop and get anything from 20 - 60 per hour dropped is this Ok or is the best figure 0.
I realise capturing on the OS drive is not best but are them some affordable alternatives to this, can I add a fire wiredrive and daisy chain the scource through it or would it not cope with the throuput.

TIA

It might depend on where the frames are dropped... they may be inconsequential.

FWIW, I'm currently using a Sony laptop with one built-in 1394 port connected to an external ADS Pyro drive-kit containing a WD120GB HD.

I have had no problems capturing or printing to tape by daisy-chaining a Sony D8 handycam through the external drive.

Zero dropped frames so far. (knock on wood...)

My acceptable rate is ZERO.

One possibility to check that was not mentioned is whether DMA is turned on for your hard drive. If it is not, you could easily get dropped frames.

DMA is turned on and the frames dropped are sometimes in the same place, so maybe a dodgy bit on tape others are random and add up to different numbers each time.

I am running XP on a 1.7Mhz AMD Athlon with a 40Gb drive.

What is a "external ADS Pyro drive-kit containing a WD120GB HD. " and wher can I get one

Thanks for the advice.

Hi zcheema,

ADS (www.adstech.com) makes an external enclosure that can house a hard drive or CD/DVD drive. It connects to the PC (or mac) via 1394.

I installed a Western Digital 120GB drive (WD120GB) into the enclosure. It works well, so far...

You can purchase either item at most computer outlets. The drive enclosure retails around 99 bucks USD, the drives were around 200.00, last I saw.

What programs do you have running in the background ? Might need to diable some windows stuff to get it going if you only have 128MB. Also, setting your file system to the network setting might help.

As far as I know all things are off (msconfig & CTRL+DEL), not sure about the network settings where would they be? Also I lie on the Ram it is 240Meg

Thanks to Martyn for his comments on the external drive.

Further to my abservations using the casablanca as a scource i have not discovered the cause of my dropped frames.
The answer lies in removing the "Enable DV device COontrol" in "Preferences" when that is done I can capture from tape with no los of frames ( I tried it for 60 minutes with no problems) This is a small price to pay for no dropped frames.
The "Capture Duration", counter now also runs smoothly and does not run in small spurts as it did in Device Control.
So all in all a happy bunny that the laptop what I wanted it to do.
