Just in passing, and maybe I have been lucky, but my first computer was an Elliot 505 in 1969 and my first home computer was a first generation Apple pre the Apple2 1976 (that didn't have a HD of course) and I have used computers daily ever since and I have never had a disk failure.

I just leave a standard house fan blowing on it while I use my Maxtor 300 gb HD. It seems to actually stay relatively cool. This discussion has made me very nervous.

re disk recovery, I've had good luck using norton's disk doctor and acronis' disk director suite ... havent' tried spinrite or others though..

anyone, good tools for recovery for the next time a maxtor fails and gets that error message?

(btw I routinely back up stuff on dvds now, using nero, that helps re peace of mind)...

maxtors are garbage/cheap storage.. I have over a dozen external 300 gig maxtor drives, and don't trust any of em more than a cheap hooker with my wallet.. (so to speak lol).

I won't be buying maxtors ever again, wish I'd known earlier. ah well.

Kencalhoun:
I said those very words in regards to Western Digital, IBM, Seagate, & Maxtor and that doesn't leave anyone left. "They are all made in Taiwan", famous Russian quote in the movie "Armageddon". Fix with large hammer then by a new one.

Don't know where you get your drives, but every one I have, of several brands, comes from Singapore, not Taiwan.

Well perhaps there was a bit of spin involved.

Yip,
almost all HDDs are made in Singapore. No company makes ALL of the drive either. There's companies that make head assemblies, others make the platters etc. It's more that likely that the only difference between any brand is who screwed the same bits together or the combination of bits they put together.
