Meaning in notes of the SVP Release 453

Len Kaufman wrote on 6/14/2015, 6:26 PM
Hi--Would appreciate it is someone could explain in plain English, the meaning of this item in the release notes of SVP #453. Would like to figure out if this might address a problem I've been having recently. "Fixed a bug that could cause the application to crash when using the Median or Min and Max video effects with an NVIDIA GPU."

Thank you,
Len

I guess these apply to VideoFXs named 'Median' and 'Min and Max'.

Thank you. Guess I haven't run into those.

OK, and for others wanting to know the description of what those SONY Fxs do, which is quite beautiful, if that's what you are wanting to do(!):-

SONY Median Fx : "This plug-in is another method of blurring an image that works by replacing pixel values with the median value from the surrounding pixels. This effect produces a smudged appearance that resembles a watercolor effect at higher pixel values. At lower values, it can be used as a correction filter to remove noise."

SONY Min Max Fx: "This filter can be used to pixelate an image or video. The exact method of pixelation is based on minimum or maximum brightness values. The pixels in the image are first grouped together and then the minimum (or maximum) pixel value in each group is applied to all of the pixels in that group"

These 2 FXs are real "Maths-hogs", the fact that SCS have lifted/broken the chains from the mathematics going on, and piped it through the GPU is very welcome. If THAT has been at a cost to stability - that'll be the BUG - then SCS squashing it for nVidia Cards - that'll be me! - then I applaud SCS for putting the time in to cure it. Thank you SCS!

I have yet to download and install the latest Build, but I look forward to checking this improvement out.

Additionally, with SCSs recent tweaking to Vegas Pro, has to go some way to assuage, or hopefully banish, the recent concerns that individuals have had that with the development of the Catalyst Group of tools, indicates, and to borrow Mark Twain's comment, concerning his own demise:"The report of my death was an exaggeration" that Vegas Pro is being safely nurtured along.

As with all things NLE, the Angels are in the Detail.

Len, do try these FXs. They may just open-up your ideas to applying them to some of your films.

Toodles

Grazie

I like the misquote better:
"The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated."

Thank you, Grazie. Your description of those plugs was just what I needed. I will certainly be trying them in the next few days.

And, though I've been using SVP for a number of years, your post made me aware of just how "deep" SVP is, and how much more I have to learn.

Grazie's comments often make many of us aware of this.
Hands up all those who, like me, went off and had a play with these two FX as a result of this thread and all of those who, like me, hadn't looked at them since their very early days with Vegas.

Sometimes you never know when you will need them and you forgot those rarely used FXs...

btw, if you need little guide of included FXs, hope my list can help you.

My hand is up, Tim (and I'm betting a lot of others, as well). Not just checking out those 2, but looking at some of the others, too. Also will be looking at your guide to the FXs, Set.
