Medai Bins: Where have all my clips gone...

I'm of the opinion that the media bins concept V 4.0 is still not what it could be... For instance, today I captured 1 hr's worth of video using the capture utility in Vegas. With DV scene detection, there were nearly 100 clips in the media bin. I didn't create a new .veg project or save the untitled since I wasn't ready to start working. But now I can't find all those wonderful clips in the media bin (yes, I know where they are on my hard drive and can get to them via the explorer tab). But then what's the point of a media bin? Also, I have other bins that were created via saving a project, but I can't explore those either (for instance, if I want to use those clips in other projects) so what's the point??? The big advantage of the media bin over the explorer window is the ability to see thumbnails of a clip, so I'd like to have that option. (SoFo - how 'bout adding a thumbnail option in the explorer window? Even Windows Explorer can do that...)

Media Bins work - and they work very well.

When you create a project - the items that you use (import) get imported into that projects media bin. WHen you close and reopen the project - the media is there (and they do show in thumbnails as long as that is the view you have selected, either the image that you are using (JPG, BMP, GIF, etc) or the first clip of the video you imported.

If after capturing your video you did not save anything from vidcap...then rightly there would be nothing in the bins - you have to start someplace. Once you bring in your clips...you can create as many bins as you want and name them what you want - for that project. I usually have a bin for video, one for images, and one for generated text. Makes it a bit easy for organization.

The Bins in the other projects are bins in the other projects. You know where the "raw" data is on your HD....simply import them into your new project. It's not like you are making duplicates of anything - and you are not doing any destructive editing...so the clips are the exact same.

So the point of bins, you see, is for organization.

When I first started bumbling around VV - I just kept everything in the "All Clips" view. After working one project with close to 100 items...it got very very confussing. Since then I tend to put everything in its own little place.

To make one point a little clearer, you need to select the view you want (much like in the explorer window) from eitehr "Thumbnails", "Details", or "List". In the Media Bin window towards the right there is an icon with a drop down arrow. Click it and choose "Thumbnails".

Hope that helps

Very clear description.

"If after capturing your video you did not save anything from vidcap...

So now I understand about the "need" to save the "default - vidcap" as something as a Index to the Media I've captured - yes? I too have noticed the Bin-missing effect.

For me this begs the question - What/How do others manage their Vidcap sessions? Do you/one save ProjectA with its Vidcap to a discreet folder? I'm pretty well clear on saving my Veg to a C: drive Veg folder, within its own tidy filing cabinet - should I save the Vidcap with the project, here it would be ProjectA - so ProjectA.svidcap - yes?

I must say, I do have a sprinkling of Vidcaps in different places - haven't followed any logical approach on this - yet.

Going back to Bins 'n Things - I've been using the SnapshotToMarkers script - great script! - But I've found after using the script once or twice I get an error message. Granted it may be me using it, but when I make a new bin and copy the Media "shortcuts" to that Bin, it works - I have too create a new Bin. I'm now wondering if the script is relying on something from Vidcap - which I may not have saved - hmmm... any takers on this one?
