Putting together a video for my wife. A family member sent me a file that plays without a probelm on Windows media. Identified as follows:

General
Complete name : C:\Documents and Settings\Ricardo\Desktop\Mama Bday.DAT
Format : CDXA/MPEG-PS
File size : 18.6 MiB
Duration : 1mn 50s
Overall bit rate : 1416 Kbps
Writing library : Pixela MPEG-1 NTSC Sequence For VideoCD, 29.97 frames/sec

Video
Format : MPEG Video
Format version : Version 1
Format settings, Matrix : Standard
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 1151 Kbps
Nominal bit rate : 1151 Kbps
Width : 352 pixels
Height : 240 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 4/3
Frame rate : 29.970 fps
Scan type : Progressive
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.455
Writing library : Pixela MPEG-1 NTSC Sequence For VideoCD, 29.97 frames/sec

I an not load it as Vegas movie studio does not see it with the .DAt extension. Tried simply renaming to .mpg but now shows Mama Bday.mpg.dat do I need to convert or how do I relabel.. sorry for the noob question.. spent a while researching...

As it is an MPEG video file it might help to rename it to xx.AVI

If you have the last update (VMSP 8.0d) it should/might be able to read it.

If not, search this forum for MJPEG - there are many good advices - however the fastest way would be to try downloading a trial version of the Morgan codec: http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/

It sounds like you may have "hide extensions for known file types" checked in Explorer's options. Turn this off. Then you should be able to rename mama.dat to mama.mpg and get rid of the .dat extension.

Video .dat files often come from VideoCDs, and they are pretty much standard MPEG 1 files.
