Media Manager won't load right

Just got my Vegas Pro 8 and tried to install media manager - had some problems, the following errors installing SQL server 2005 -

SQL server system configuration checker cannot be executed due to WMI configuraion on the machine XXX Error 2137943398 (OX800703e6)

Then later installing media manager:

Unable to adjust the security serivce on Service MSSQL$Sony_mdeamgr2

Service does not exist or the current account doesn't have enough privaleges

The data base failed to initialize properly

The account being installed from is an administrator privaliged account - Windows XP Media Edition 32 bit. It's a fairly fresh installation with not much else loaded at this time, and virus protection was turned off during the load. I tried to uninstall everything with media manager and the 2 SQL server programs but it still didn't work the second time. When I start 8.0c it shows it can't open media manager. WMI is started, WMI Driver extentions is not started. Any suggestions on how to fix this installation so I can get media manager running?

I have the same problem. I a very tired of Vegas 8. This is one of a few on going problems I am having with Version 8.

Version 7 was so much better and more stable.

Vegas 8 owners should get a substantial discount beyond the regular upgrade price to purchase version 9 when it comes out.

I don't think this is a Vegas issue. If you do a google on sql server and xp problems you get a ton of hits.

Are you using windows firewall?

I would agree with Blink here. I have installed MM on three different hard drives (two on the same machine), all with 8c on them. It installed just fine, with no problems, and it functions perfectly as far as I can tell. It doesn't work on Vegas 8.1, but that's a known bug. But even on my 64-bit 8c installation, MM works just like advertised.

I have no firewalls on any of these machines, btw.

I'd like to resurrect this thread for a minute or two...

After optimizing my XP Pro installation a couple of days ago with the tips given in http://www.audioforums.com/resources/windows-xp-optimization.htmlthis link[/link], I experienced the same problem as the OP in this thread. Recalling this thread I went to work trying to figure out where the issue was. So I read the links that Blink posted, and these were somewhat helpful. Basically they pointed me in the direction of the System Configuration Utility that you can get to by typing msconfig after selecting Start > Run from the desktop. After spending a few minutes checking things over in the Services tab, I fixed the problem and Media Manager works normally again.

The issue was that in the link I mentioned above, the recommendation is to modify the processes and services that are allowed to start when the machine is booted. If you look in the Startup Services/Applications section of that link, it tells you how to optimize the start-up process and minimize the number of processes/services that XP allows to run; thus conserving system resources and optimizing audio/video processing performance. But the problem was that I had inadvertently deselected the SQL Server (SONY_MEDIAMGR2) service, and hosed Media Manager. Once I reselected this service by simply checking the box and rebooting the system, Media Manager functioned normally again.

So for anyone still having the problems mentioned in the OP, check that this service (as well as the SQL Server VSS Writer service) is allowed to start at boot. Chances are good that this might be part (or all) of the problem you are having with the Media Manager.

Sorry I have not been back to reply sooner. I went to "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841251" followed the instructions except I had to go to Live OneCare for the firewall. That corrected it.

I still believe that Vegas should have an update for this problem. The reason I say this is that Vegas 8 is the only program that I have any problems with. at least to this extent. Rendering problems, etc. It is up to the individual software developers, such as Sony to make sure their product works with it.

That being said, I believe Vegas is still the best editing program. I’ve been using it since Vegas 3 and before that, I used Sonic Foundry's Video Factory. I also have Acid Pro 7, DVD A 5, Sound Forge Pro 9, Cinescore, most of the loops, etc. I’m sure when Vegas 9 comes out I will get that too.

Anyway, thanks for the help. It will save me some time having to look for the sounds.

I ended up reloading the OS (XP64) and for some reason the sql server 2005 loaded fine this time and media manager loaded as well - probably something with the order of updates from MS for XP that makes the difference - but I don't know which one specifcally - I'm happy now though since it's working fine.
