media properties control

I asked this question several months ago and never really solved the issue, so I am going to try it again. I have a program that has seven chapters that were marked in VMS9.0b. The markers were rendered with the media and brought into DVDAS4.5d.
I have the top level menu made with two items. PLAY ALL and CHAPTER SELECT. The seven chapters are arranged on a two page menu. I want it set up so that when I select one chapter and play it to it's end, the system will return to the CHAPTER SELECT page.
I have tried every combination of the "end action" page that I can come up with but when it comes to the end of the selected chapter, the thing just keeps right on playing through the rest of the material. (This is in the "preview" mode)
Can someone give me a clue as to what I am missing?

kentm,

You will probably have to give some more details about what exactly you tried with the end actions and what exactly was the result.

There is also a DVDA forum, where you will probably get more help. Good luck.

I believe the end action is meant for the end of the media, not a chapter within the media. To get what you want, I think you're going to have to render each chapter as a separate file.

When you select a piece of media on the overview window you get an "End Action" button on the right side. There are several options where you can select it to link to other pieces of media or menu pages, but I can not make it work. SCS support keeps telling me how to do it but it does not work for me. It seems to be fairly straight forward as explained in the help files. I am missing something in the work flow I guess. I did try to render the chapters separately and that will allow the return to the menu at the end of the selected media. Now how do I get it to play the entire program when I do not choose to select a chapter????

When you render the entire disk as a single file with chapter markers, the "media" for each chapter is really the entire file. Selecting an end action here applies to the end of the media, which is the end of the file, not the end of the chapter.

If you render each chapter separately you can add each chapter to the disc twice. It won't take up twice as much space because DVDA is smart enough to know you're using the same file for both "copies". You can then create a play all menu that points to the first chapter, and that chapter's end action points to the next, and so forth. The chapter select menu will point to the other copies of the files, and those end actions can be set to return to the menu.

I haven't tried this, but i think it's possible to use the single file approach with chapter markers for the play all, and then also import each chapter individually from that single file by using the in and out markers. You'll end up with a simpler structure because you're dealing with only one file. DVDA will import each section that uses in/out markers as if it was a media file that starts and ends at those markers, but will also know that it already has the larger file that section came from so it will reference that instead of having duplicate copies on the disc.

Thanks for the reply. This approach makes sense. I am surprised that I can't get a solution like that from SCS. They have told me twice now that what I was doing should be working. I have reloaded the software several times etc. to no avail. I will give this a try and see if I can get through it. Thanks again.

Another response from SCS provided the answer. They sent the following link.
This provided the steps required to add a playlist that I named "PLAY ALL". I brought each of the chapters/segments into the program as individual media instead of one long segment and created the menu for playing one segment at a time. Then I added a button for the playlist which plays all segments one after the other.
Thank to all that have responded.
