Media Size Problem

Okay, I'm new to this, but I have been having the same problem on each DVD I've attempted to create. Now I dont know all of technical terms so I shall attempt to explain this as best as I can.

I am creating a widescreen (720x480) DVD and the menus fit that ratio. I usually have a background mpeg2 video for the menus and they look fine with the DVD.

However, the problem is with the media I have inserted into the DVD. The media I use is usually all in MPEG2 format. Now it is widescreen..but there is a distinct strip of maybe one to two inches on either side of the media when it is playing (the strip runs vertically) that is nothing but a black strip. Basically, it looks like the media wont stretch properly. It looks, with the widescreen format, as if there is a huge black border around every side of the media.

I dont understand how to change this, and I dont understand what I am doing wrong since the menus stretch propely acrossed the entire screen.

Please help, thank you.

Can't help much without more information about the files you're using.

What is the source of the video, ie where did it come from?

What format it is in? You say, "The media I use is usually all in MPEG2 format" (emphasis mine) -- so is that to mean that this one isn't? If so, does it have an MPG extention or MPV or MP2 or...?

And you're sure that the media is widescreen? How does it appear in Vegas if you start a widescreen Vegas project and put this movie on the timeline?

What version (including update letter) of DVDA are you using?

I do not know the video source because these are clips I've downloaded from the internet.

Oh, and I was using Architect 2.0a

Well I just put the video back into vegas, which is odd because i actually created the clip in there (its basically a musical compilation with video) and now it appears in that odd format too.

I guess I'll just have to sort the problem out in vegas.

Thank you though.

MPEG files from the Internet can be almost anything, both in terms of the encoder used, as well as the dimensions. DVD Architect will re-encode and resize the image as best it can in order to conform to the DVD standard resolutions. If you want to do something else, then you should re-size and re-encode outside of DVDA.

The key thing you need to find out is resolution of the clip. If you right click on the file in Windows Explorer, you should be able to get this from the properties.

My guess (and that's all it is, a guess) is that the file you brought into DVDA is not widescreen, but rather a 4:3 video that's been letterboxed. Could be that the original clips were that way, or could be that you put widescreen clips into a Vegas project and rendered it out to 4:3 video.

But a letterboxed video put into a widescreen project (DVDA or Vegas) would appear just as you describe, with black bars on all sides -- on the top and bottom from the original letterboxing, and on the sides from being put into a widescreen project.

This might not be the case in your situation, but it's a reasonable guess based on what you've posted.
