Media with two different End Actions?

jkrepner wrote on 4/12/2005, 8:40 AM
I tried to do a search first, but I didn't know how to word my search to get the info I need, so here goes.

Is there a way for media to have two different end actions?

I have a main menu with a "Play All" title that links to a video-media. This video has an end action that is linked to the next video, which is linked to the next video, and so on. Also on the main menu I have these videos listed separately. I want each of those video to end action back to the main menu. I could just bring in two copies of each video, one that links its end action to the next video and another that links its end action back to the main menu. But then I might start running into file size issues.

This has to have come up before. Am I missing something like usual?

Thanks in advance.

Jeff

Yes. Add the media to the project TWICE and use one for the play all and the other one for the other version.

Doesn't that take up additional space? I'm not in front of the project at the moment.

Thanks.

Nope. Not if you add the exact same media file (i.e. the exact same file on the disk twice). It's smart enough to use the same file in multiple ways.

Oh perfect, thank you so much.

Now the only problem is that I'm NOT smart enough to use the same file in multiple ways. Ha Ha.

Jetdv,

Thanks for the tip. I was just wondering about this same thing. Doesn't seem as intuitive as I'd like, especially as each copy comes in with the same name (no instance numbering, etc). I know we can manually rename these in the assets list to distinguish (and it still remembers they're the same).

After I read this, I was trying to add a media file to the same menu twice, which of course, creates multiple buttons which I didn't want for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th files in a play all list. Took me a while to realize I should just import the media at the root level (right-click the disk icon, not the menu icon) and then specify links from menu buttons as needed.

A nice feature for those doing this is the first toolbar item immediately above the disk icon. Its tool tip says "Toggle Display of End Actions". Click this and now you can easily follow the play all chain in the asset list.

Since it sounds like you're using DVDA3 now, the new playlist feature is a much simpler way of "chaining" videos than using end actions.

bStro,

I guess I haven't been paying attention to the new features of DVDA well enough. This simplifies things greatly and is much more intuitive!

Thanks,
Steve
