MediaManager Issues

"John...... take it easy and remain calm :))"

If you're talking to me... I am taking it easy and remaining calm. I've purchased a very effective stress reducer (and, no, it's not a drug.) Someone on this thread could possibly be an idiot, but I no longer care.

good onya john!

i have to say it's like having bill conduit around again. and, as long as you ignore him, he can be quite entertaining in his antics.

Wow, all this but has anyone seen the media manager video, other than me? Maybe a expert like someone here can make a better media manager video and post it on the web for us. Let me know when it is done to see if Vasst forgot something in theirs.

The VASST tutorial that was included in the Vegas 6 DVD gives all the information you need for making productive use of the MM. What more do you want?

I understand how it works as far as filtering via tags, I'm just not able to narrow down enough using the Sony tags because the genres have changed so much and many of the tags are outdated or overly broad, like "old school".

Why don't you people try to understand the first post ?

Maybe you haven't adequately described the problem (i.e. I haven't understood). I presume you're saying that creating your own tags for subsets (e.g. drums 1...n) isn't enough. What would you like MM to do?

Thats what I think, the Vasst video is fine. I was hoping someone else here would watch it so they could start using media manager and see there is no need for anyone else to do one. I have found that if you ask someone to fix what they are complaining about the problem somehow goes away fast. Maybe because there is no problem to start with?

Well, not only that, but to use folders would be a reverse lookup process where tags become the folders and clips have to be duplicated, so that's not efficient.

Mikey, I like MM but do find some things I would like corrected:

1. Resolve offline media is not at all intuitive. You have to list all your media, select it, drag you mouse about one pixel, and you will be presented with the offline media dialog. If you then figure out how to specify your own search folder (because smart search is really dumb search) it will resolve all it finds UNTIL the first one it can't find. Instead of skipping or stopping with a prompt, it just stops. This whole part of MM should be an embarassment to the programmers.

2. If you are like me, you have several versions of Vegas installed. I have a MM "Resource Library" which has all my reusable VEG's among other things. I like that I can preview those VEGs in MM but if I want to open one in a new instance of Vegas I can't just right click and select open with Vegas because on my system it uses Vegas 8 which obviously can't open newer VEGs. Either it should display all Vegas versions identified by name/version in the list, or default to the version that created the VEG if it is available.

3. Frequently MM will corrupt a library. Fortunately, you can use Windows Explorer to copy the library and MM (so far) has been able to open the copy. Eventually it too will become corrupt and you then need to make yet another copy. I have had this problem on three different computers over several years with MM. Others have reported it in these forums and I have submitted detailed information to SCS over a year ago. I just had the problem again this morning with my 9e installation so it hasn't been fixed.

Improvements I would like to see:

1. Be able to maintain the location and project use count of media that has been moved offline.

2. Be able to open two or more libraries at once in separate tabs. Typically I create a library for each larger project, and would always like to have my "Resources Library" open.

3. Adobe's Lightroom is an excellent example of a Digital Asset Manager and what can be done given enough resources, but something of that caliber is not likely for Vegas. But one thing SCS should consider is switching to the open source SQL database SQLite which is now the underlying database for Lightroom. It is much lighter weight than Microsoft's and is a much better performer.

4. SCS should open up MM to 3rd-party developers via a published API just as they have done with Vegas.

I agree with you that there is no need for anyone else to create a new MM, but I wish SCS would refine what was a good start.

I find just having a window open with a folder view and using VLC for preview is much simpler and seems to accomplish the same thing.

At least the view is in realtime, I don't trust the filters yet. Maybe I DO need to see a video, I'm the odd man out on this.

I didn't realize the ForumAdmin was probably reading this post, and "stinks" is not too good so I'm going to change it on the subject, if I'm doing something against the rules I'll change it back.

Whoops, looks like it doesn't propagate, can you people help me out on this?
