Check this out - all done without computers. Frank Zappa is alleged to have said "better than the Beatles.' Copyrights are for everyone. Originially pressed in vinyl, re-released in CD, and you can buy it on Amazon.

I'm not sure what genre I'd call it, but definitely alternative.

Very interesting discussion. But taking it further afield perhaps many of us don't realise how the digital age has impacted all of the arts.
Pen, pencil, brush and paper have been largly replaced by digital technology. The technology to reproduce paintings by the masters is now vastly better than just taking a photo of the thing, the very surface texture can now be digitized and then it recreated with not overly expensive equipment.
Same goes for sculpture, I can buy an extact replica of the great sculptures. They look and feel like real cast bronze but they're a polymer / sintered brass composite that's much easier to mold. The moulds were produced by scanning the original using 3D laser scanners, the copies are accurate to thousandths of an inch.
Sculptures can be designed in a virtual space and then spat out on a number of digital modelling systems at compatively low cost. Want to do some massive sculpture out of sheet stainless, piece of cake with CAD, NC machines and plasma cutters cut the panels to exact shape, once it's rolled into a 3D surface welding it together is pretty simple, making scaled models for sale, not a problem.
And getting back to music and Acid, I'm curious to know if anyone has tried taking it up a few notches. I can see no reason why each instrument couldn't be mapped into a virtual acoustic space. A listening position chosen and the experience mapped through a concert halls acoustics to recreate the experience of sitting in row 14D. Acoustic Mirror comes close but only works for a fixed position. I can see no reason why much more astute technology couldn't be bought into play to map multiple sound sources into a 3D field along with various listening / mic positions.

The shaggs - my gosh. LOL!! Have you ever seen the Dave Markey music videos of some of their stuff? Typical Dave style and I couldn't think of a better band for him..and to think this inner circle of bad led him to Nirvana. I guess The Shaggs were right up there with Shonen Knife, before they got a US major to sign 'em that is...back in the Bill Bartell and Redd Kross helping them days. (Or I should say Shonen Knife was up there with The Shaggs) Course there was also the Zappa creation, The GTO's. Not as bad as the Shaggs or Shonen Knife however. And this brings up Wildman Fisher and the whole start of Rhino Records - the label.

I think a few various methods have been used to try this sort of thing. Roger Waters used Zuccarelli labs for recording in "holophonics", the press the format got when it came out has vanished somewhat but still the guy is still around. There is also Qsound which first was heard via Madonnas "The Immaculate Collection" CD but probably more known by most PC geeks via the Sound Blaster cards and Real players use of it. Also there is SRS which has various items that do audio feats of wonder. For example the SRS "Circle Surround" is described as "a breakthrough audio technology, which delivers 100% stereo compatible 5.1 surround sound using the existing, standard Compact Disc format. This means recording artists and their labels can produce and deliver stereo and 5.1 surround mixes in a single package." And on the consumer side with SRS "TruSurround, the six discrete channels of digital audio are processed into just two channels and delivered over two speakers giving the listener a completely immersive experience and the sensory perception that they are surrounded by additional 'phantom' speakers."

Check out:

Hugo Zuccarelli used to have his own WebTV website however it has vanished. He was building sound systems for Churches and the last email I have for him is zuccarelli [AT] yahoo [DOT] com

EDIT - Updated links so they work.
