Can't answer your first question, I'm not sure what you did or did not do. Maybe others with more experience can help'

The second statement also needs to be clarified. To you, what is a ridiculous render time? Are you rendering in DVDA or in Vegas? Mpg2 & AC3 audio rendering time will be shorter if done in Vegas. A 2 hour video can be rendered to Mpg2 in about 3 hours. I think AC3 audio is around 10 minutes or more, cannot remember right now. In DVDA it could take up to 5-6 hours or more and this also depends on the number animated chapters moving backgrounds, number of pages, etc.

I think I have that right, others please correct me if I'm wrong.

Let me guess. Are you using an Akai ADV-2280 set top player to view the completed DVD?

No, i've just been using the Power DvD software that came with the computer, i have not attempted to play the menu-based DVD, on a set top player.

Then that's your problem. Power DVD and other software players aren't a proper test to test if or not your DVD is burned correctly. Use a set top DVD player. Check the compatibility list over at DVDhelp.
