Incidentally and at first sight without having done any testing, the Stand Alone Version seems to offer even more options that the excellent Plug In.

I didn't see any settings in the SAL that you couldn't transfer to the full Mercalli V2 plugin in the Vegas interface. Thank goodness, because the workflow you just described would be a real headache. The SAL gives you their instrumentation, so that instead of randomly choosing (guessing) settings you can do it with some rhyme and reason.

Also, you don't need an intermediate to use the SAL if you're only using it to find the right settings. I installed Matroska splitter and ffdshow-tryouts and the SAL reads my HDV files directly.
