Mercalli v5 plugins for Vegas

Comments

@JN-, @fifonik

To say it another way: If you bought v5 SAL (or upgraded from SAL 4 for free) you DO NOT get plugins for Vegas.

If today you do buy Plugins for Vegas suite v5, then you will also get SAL 5 included for free as per 3points list above.

Prodad seem to be taking a "belt & braces" approach and giving you three ways to work: New mercalli RT, old style Mercalli (Pro), or SAL if you need it. I guess this is why they gave the v5 SAL upgrade for free.

(I should add... this is only MY UNDERSTANDING of how it works. I may be wrong, and there may also be other deals and situations that I am unaware of.)

@Kinvermark @fifonik Well thats clear enough I guess, but I do think its a bit of a mess, maybe makes sense to proDad.

@Kinvermark  The Mercalli 4 plug-in that I got with the trial of Mercalli 5 Suite doesn't seem to be any different than the version 4 that I already had for some time now. Stereoscopic modes are supported. I tried my old version 4 serial number in the new Mercalli 4, but it didn't work.

One thing about the RT version is that it can be applied as a Media FX.

Side note: After uninstalling all Mercalli installations, the RT plug-in was not removed. I had to manually delete it along with some other trial color plug-in.

Mercalli V4 works well enough for me.

So my thoughts about Mercalli V5 vs Mercalli V4 after testing it.

+ V5 RT: New border fill option (fill from other frames). To be honest, I expected to see the option in V5 Pro. I knew this option from Deshaker era and this is what I really want.
+ V5 RT: More virtual cam presets
- V5 RT: Bug when selecting Camera. It changes parameters, but show that 'Glide' is still selected. It is not possible to understand what preset was choosen.
- V5 RT: Slow as hell.
Default "Remap mode" is Linear. Quality is worse then Cubic (default in Pro), but even in this mode it gives only 22 fps on my system in 32-bit project (28 fps in 8-bit project). With Cubic -- 11 fps in 32-bit project (12 fps in 8-bit project).
This is NOT realtime (RT = RealTime) and much worse than I can get with Pro (50+fps in 32-bit project, 60fps in 8-bit project).
Dev claims it can use 128 cores, however on my system with 16 cores it uses less then 20% CPU and no GPU. In contrast, Pro in Cubic mode gives 50+ fps and uses 20% CPU and almost 40% GPU
- V5 RT: You will not see any changes you made in parameters until you start preview.
This is very unconvenient as when you changing parameters your focus is in the plugin window and to start preview you have to click to main window first. So you will work blindly almost all the time or click here and there. And because of this you have to forget about frame accurate editing.
- V5 RT: You cannot see real preview when you click at another position on timeline.
You need to start preview first. Even after this you will see some frames from old cursor position and only then it will jump to the new position.
- V5 RT: At the very beginning of every fragment with the stabilization, it adds big jump.
This makes the RT completely useless if you are working with Video Events (not media) or you really need the very beginning of your fragment.
- V5 Pro and RT: Check for updates does not work. Claim firewall issue, but there is no special firewall rules and no issue while accessing web site in browser. Other programs (including Mercalli V4) also able to check for updates. Not really know what is going on.
= V5 Pro: No any UI changes agains V4 Pro. Renders exactly the same (file size is exactly the same and video tracks difference does not show any differences).

My test projects:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/3qua0n4ueypbpg9/Mercalli_V5.zip?dl=1 (500MB)

In the archive you can find:

- Source file and 4 projects created in VP15/VP17 (Mercalli Pro, Mercalli RT, VP15 Vegas Stabilize, VP17 Video Stabilization)

- Screenshots with project settings & encoder settings.

- 5 rendered files (Mercalli Pro V4, Mercalli Pro V5, Mercalli RT, VP15 Vegas Stabilize, VP17 Video Stabilization).

I'm Mercalli V4 user so I did with it as I usually do.

I never used Vegas stabilizers. Tried my best but it is possible that I missed something important.

Also, Mercalli RT is new for me so it is possible that I missed some important steps. So it is possible that some issues mentioned above can be avoided. Please let me know if you know how to do this.

But for now I would not recommend upgrade from V4 to V5.

P.S. Trying to cancel my order.

@fifonik - Yup, and thanks for your testing.

JN- wrote on 3/7/2020, 4:29 AM

@fifonik In the short time I had it installed I saw this also ... "Bug when selecting Camera. It changes parameters, but show that 'Glide' is still selected. It is not possible to understand what preset was chosen"

I uninstalled shortly after this, doesn't inspire confidence. Maybe wait about 6 months for bugs to be fixed. Thanks for comprehensive testing.

Well, downloaded the trial. I have V5 standalone and used it on a difficult clip that neither the legacy, vegas or Mercalli V4 would give an acceptable result. V5 standalone was brilliant a perfect result - smooth steady pan with corrected rotation. So I had high expectations of the plugin. Unfortunately nowhere near the SAL version.

@andyrpsmith

Question: when you processed the "difficult clip" using plugins, did you apply CMOS fixer first?

I haven't done extensive testing, but applying "precise GPU" CMOS fixer (apply first and render out an intermediate) followed by almost any stabilizer, appears to give same quality results as SAL.

andyrpsmith wrote on 3/8/2020, 8:51 PM

No but I will give that a try. Many thenks.

I couldn't wait to get my paws on the paid version of Mercalli 5 Suite (upgrading from 4), while it's at a 20% discount. I also have Magix Movie Edit Pro 2015 in which to try out the RT plug-in. The name of the camera preset in the drop-down box works correctly there. The Vegas version gives you the correct settings even though the camera name sticks on Glide. And I think that the Prodad logo was causing problems in the trial version. Now when playback stops, the preview keeps the RT stabilization state most of the time. Scrubbing can cause glitches as you probably noticed.

So far the RT realtime plugin does not deal with rotation in the video that well compared to Ver2, Ver4 and Ver5 SAL. Also RT is more intensive on the timeline. So far I can see no reason to upgrade just yet.

Mercalli Pro plugin has the same internal id as Mercalli V4. I guess there is no difference other than a new name.

CMOS Fixr - not changed. RT and Picture Enhanzr are new.

Bought the magix v5 suite. It comes with additional activation code for video pro x. It this legit? I don't own video pro x. What is going on?

@BruceUSA You are not getting an activation code for video pro x. You are getting an activation code to use Mercalli in video pro x or videodeluxe (Movie Edit Pro).
