merge projects with different track structure

Currently, I am working on a project which consists of many smaller subprojects, and I want to use track motion, parent and child, etc. I want to create each subproject as a separate projectfile, and later merge them.
Some subprojects will have a different track layout and different track motion and masking than other subprojects.
If I merge two subprojects, the events of the second subproject are placed on the tracks of the first subproject and the track layout, motion etc. of the second subproject is lost.
How can I avoid this?

Vegas Pro has nested projects, in which you drag a project file onto the timeline just like you would a media file. Everything in that nested project is preserved.

The Studio version doesn't have this feature, which leaves you kinda stuck. I don't really think there is a solution. You could render out each subproject into an uncompressed or lossless format individually, then load all those new rendered files into a master project for final rendering. However, this means if you find something you have to change then you've got to do that rendering all over again.
