Microphone not detected on timeline

When I connect microphone to Realtek Audio card (integrated into motherboard in VSM), the sound meter detects input but nothing arrives on timeline. I have checked all settings and microphone tests ok.

Am I missing something, or is there a fundamental problem here? I have altered all settings to PAL (Aus). All other audio is ok except this microphone problem.

I guess that you have done (what I usually forget): Go into control Panel + Sounds and Audio Devices + Audio and there set the Sound Recording device to the card where the mike is attached?

If Yes, you should be able to "arm" a audiotrack in the timeline for recording - where Vegas then asks where to store the recorded files? - and thereafter see the meter show something if you touch the mike or say something?

If Yes press the red record-button left under the time-line and say something - and then press the button again - whereafter Vegas asks if the recording is OK - and after your pressing Done - the recording will be in the audio track and also in the Project Media - and with the name Voice Recording XX.wav

Ok??

Thank you for your advice. I tried what you suggested, and I am now getting sound on the timeline but it has a very low volume. I reset the clip settings to -90 to0 db and now suspect that the microphone may have an intermittent fault in it. Can you suggest how I might boost or improve the weak signal?

Thanks again

It may be that your sound card has no preamp in it, it likely doesn't. While computer mics don't need a pre, if you have a low impedance mic or a mic with low output, then you'll need a pre. Have you selected the "Boost Mic" option in your Audio control panel? This will amplify any noise as well, but if you're using a computer-type mic, it'll likely sound pretty poor anyway.

Thank you for your reply. I have a Realtek audio soundcard incorporated in Asus P5LD2 dual processor MB (new computer) and microphone is Nady SBM-500 stereo condenser. The microphone works perfectly on digital camcorder. All other sound outputs are good.

I have rechecked audio settings in windows and they are at maximum.

In Control Panel + Sounds and Audio... + Audio + Sound recording Volume + Recording Control + Microphone Advanced => Advanced controls for Microphone - down in the left corner, you can check Mic Boost - - that might help??

Problem fixed. I found the mic boost setting which brought the volume up dramatically. Thanks to everyone that contributed in this Forum. I would never have found it on my own.
