Min CPU for editing AX100 files?

relaxvideo wrote on 7/14/2014, 11:31 PM
I have i7-2600 CPU and a weak nvidia 210 vga.
DV, HDV and AVCHD was fine with Vegas11, but now i have
some AX100 4k PAL footage, which is hardly editable in Vegas.
Playback is 25fps in preview (quarter) quality without any fx or gpu processing (lol).

The problem:
when i click to another part of the timeline, fps drops to 2 fps, and i have to wait 5-10 sec for 25 fps again.
CPU usage is always around 20%, so i don't understand that 2 fps slow down.

Maybe Vegas11 is not 4k friendly enough, and 12 or 13 will be better?
Will 16GB ram help? Now i have 8GB but only 3GB is used.
If i don't want to upgrade my vga card, what CPU should i use?
If i have to upgrade my vga card, what is the minimum which is good for simple 4k editing with transition (dissolve)?

thanks a lot!

Minimun, you would need HD6970 card to get good timeline performance. You really need a beefy pc intel 6 cores to do any smooth editing with 4k. I have sample forum member, oldsmoke 4k on my system and it works well. I was able to add 3 sony fx on the tl and still getting smooth playback.

ps. just think this, you used to edit 1080P acvhd and now you are editing 4k, that is 4x of 1080P, 4x of data that the cpu/gpu have to deal with. To make it easier for the pc is to transcode your footage?

I use the AX100 extensively, and edit the footage with Vegas Pro 13 and Windows 8.1 on my Macbook Pro quad core i7 with NVidia 750m gpu. That lets me get a full 30fps on the timeline with Best(Full) preview setting, although I don't do any multi cam. If you edit with multiple stacked tracks or video effects then naturally you will need much more gpu than I have, it just depends on your typical workflow. For mine a single 750m gpu lets me edit in realtime with AX100 footage.

Pete,

Are you saying you can edit 4k in your mighty quad core macbook pro? I am not clear you meant 1080P or 4K . Can you please clarify a little more?

Yup I do all editing of my 4k AX100 files on my Haswell based Macbook Pro because Vegas Pro 13 under Windows 8.1 makes good use of it's NVidia 750m gpu for the timeline. From what I've read you won't get the same results if you run Vegas Pro 13 under Mac OSX using Parallels or some other such tool as it then can't take advantage of the gpu, which is possibly why my results differ so greatly from other peoples results as I use Windows 8.1. I set the preview window to 8 bit (thanks to oldsmoke and johnny for suggesting that!) at best/full setting, and it previews at a full 30fps for the AX100's 4k content.

Just to be clear, my editing of 4k files consists of cutting and moving segments around, I do not do any multi track editing. Also the last step after I've edited the content together is to add a color corrector and tweak that, with the color corrector on there the fps definitely drops however for me it's the final step so not a big deal. Finally I use the AX100 which is 60mbps for 4k content, I don't know if other higher bitrate 4k content would play at full 30fps on the timeline like say from a GH4 or AX1.

Pete,

So, as soon you add FX and your frame rate are dropping that is expected as you have mentioned it . Need a lot of horsepower to get smooth full frame rate in playback with 4k for sure. Although I don't do any 4k editing at the movement. As you probably have read my post above. My system can edit 4k with 3 FX added onto the timeline and still getting smooth playback.

You could always edit with proxies on a lessor machine.

Thanks for the replies, but:

I don't want to use proxies.
I don't work with multiple 4k video tracks.
I just want to cut parts and made simple dissolves.
If my cpu is not enough why is cpu usage so low in task manager?
I will try Vegas12/13.

thanks
