Missing AMD VCN encoder for Rendering in Vegas Pro 19.

z8373767 wrote on 6/7/2022, 2:44 AM

Hi!

I just upgraded my GPU from R9 Fury to RX 6900XT. I used Vegas Pro a lot for simply NLE features. R9 Fury used AMD VCE very efficiency. I hope RX 6900XT will have much better encoder named VCN, but i don't see it at all. I read that 6900XT should use AMD VCE as part of legacy, but still it's not possible. AMD VCE is missing. Vegas is recognizing GPU perfectly as you can see on screenshot
.

I tried every combination of Enabling legacy AVC/HEVC.
I already reinstall Vegas 19 and GPU drivers several times. Tried Beta Drivers, WHQL Drivers, Modded NimeZ Drivers.
Bringing back Vegas to default settings, removing cache settings, removing some leftovers in reg.edit. Still same.
I am missing something?

I tried to find solution online. One forum user had similar problem on RX 5700XT, but he manage to fix it by reinstalling drivers and Vegas itself.

I would do a clean driver uninstall with DDU, install the latest AMD Pro driver and try again.

Interesting.... my next card will be RX6700XT..... I will be following this thread. I am sure that there is someone out there with a current gen AMD graphics card....

Did it every time + AMD CleanupUtility. Pro Drivers did nothing. Why should I use Pro Driver at all? I used regular one on R9 Fury, even modded with latest libraries avaiable from WU. AMD VCE works perfectly fine then.
Handbreak shows encoders

and even utilize it

Why Vegas can't?

Pro driver is tested for software including Vegas.

Vegas probably still thinks the old card is there but can't use it.

Very memorable this Vegas is. After several re-installation, doing CTRL+SHIFT factory reset and cleaned system registry. Yes...

Yes, you are missing the preparation. I also got my RX6900XT days ago for 969Euro. Here you go:

1, reassemble the old card into your PC.

2, uninstall all AMD graphic card driver(s) until you see the display adapter is the pure Windows one.

3, reboot your PC, and confirm once again that adapter is Windows' general basic one - If you will, run once CCleaner to clear the registry.

4, shut your PC down, assemble the new card.

5, install this version driver (not the newest one).

6, after that AMD will give you a small auto OC. Take it. In VEGAS, you will see

GPU acceleration of video processing: Optimal - AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT

Cheers.

Finally. both AVC and HEVC have AMD VCE

Solution was... using 22.5.1 instead of 22.5.2.

I do some internal research for 22.5.2. AMD did a lot of changes under the hood. So i will stick with 22.5.1 for now. I hope AMD will resolve this problem in future releases.

@Reyfox I decided to upgrade my RX 5500 XT to an RX 6800 XT and I still get constant crashing. It's unusable unless I enable Legacy AVC Decoding and then it's pretty stable and I can work happily. But of course I'm not using the GPU to it's full potential. I hope you don't start to get the same problems when you get your new card. I will be very interested to know how you get on 👍🙂

I notice it's the same if I switch between the gaming drivers and the pro drivers for my RX 6800 XT. The 22.Q2 driver doesn't give me the AMD VCE encoding options. With hardware decoding, files from my Mavic Mini play glitchy on the timeline with the gaming drivers but plays smooth with the pro drivers or with Legacy AVC Decoding enabled. Files from my Panasonic and GoPro are unaffected.

Stick to 21.5.1 for while. Every newer update, 22.5.2 4th edition (yep, AMD release this branch 4th time for now) 22.Q2 and UWP are missing VCE

@Vincent-Brice there is a user here who uses almost exclusively AMD graphics cards with Intel CPU's.

@Howard-Vigorita is using RX6900XT, Radeon VII, Vegas 64, and RX580. He hasn't posted any issues with those cards in his many computers.

Prices are good here in Poland.... well, not as good as the States.... but good for here. Maybe drop him a message and see what drivers he is using.

I have to say, my old and abused RX480 8GB works great with the latest Radeon drivers, 22.5.1. I've never had any problems in the 5 years of using Vegas.

@Reyfox Ah yes, but doesn't he use the intel graphics for decoding? Whereas me and you both have 3900x. When I put in my old Radeon R9 380 I had no crashes either, only with the newer ones. But I don't regret getting the RX 6800, Vegas aside, it's a great PC and the 3900x and RX 6000 series are a good match. And as long as I select Legacy AVC Decoding all is well. It's funny, the fastest render time I got on the Magix 4K benchmark project was 1:04.64 and loop section ave of 14fps with Legacy AVC Decoding enabled. Please let me know how you get on when you get your new card 🙂

Just install 22.5.1

Secondary revision of 22.6.1 and VCE is still missing.

A friend wanted me to test is AMD RX6600. I was glad to since a 6700XT will be here next week.

I have a RX480 with 22.5.1 drivers. No problems and VCE shows up in the Render selection.

I installed the graphics drivers for the RX6600, restarted computer, launched Vegas which already had a project on the timeline, and AMD VCE appears in the Render window. I did a short render to see if there was any difference between the 480 and 6600, and I was able to finish the render 3X faster with the 6600.

Upon the release notes, the following fix was singled out:
"Fixed issues,
DaVinci Resolve™ Studio 17 may crash using AMD encoder on some AMD Graphics Products such as the Radeon™ RX 6900 XT Graphics."

Yep, it's working again. Performance of rendering was a crap, but i change GPU Decoder for Intel QSV (Vid Preview on AMD always runs very slow), so AMD Encoder can handle render to file in full speed.
