The Mainconcept shows up and renders on my machine, but there is a watermark on the render because I haven't purchased it.

Mjpeg should show up as just another avi codec, selected in the customize dialogs. If you're running Vegas 64 however, it won't work with any 32 bit avi codecs, & they might not show up at all.

That said, depending on the electronics in your frame, it may be a special version of mjpeg that's very different from anything morgan etc will spit out. You'll also see this with some still cameras, & many portable players. Sansa has a good example, that will only play video encoded by their app, period.... vid you'd swear was identical won't be recognized. 'Course that wouldn't effect you're not being able to encode to mjpeg in Vegas -- just a heads up to make sure you're fighting for something that'll do you some good in the end. ;-)

I don't have Morgan MJPEG, but I do have Morgan MJPEG2000 (a different codec marketed by the same company) installed and it works perfectly fine with 32 bit Vegas Pro 9 (and it worked with versions 8 and 7 also, as I recall). When you "Render as ...", use "Video for Windows AVI" and a custom template (click the "Custom" button). In the dialog box where you choose the video format, look for Morgan MJPEG, it should show up there. Make sure that you configure the codec properly for your frame.

I would also suggest that you download the freeware "codec appliance" GSpot and see if the Morgan MJPEG codec VFW version shows up in the list of codecs that are installed on your system.

I've never seen an .AVI based mjpeg implementation. Do others have this? It's common in the quicktime container.

"I've never seen an .AVI based mjpeg implementation."

I can't think of a time when I haven't had some sort of MJPEG .AVI capability. The MIRO DC-30 video capture card used it, so did my Matrox Digisuite, there are several codec-only implementations (I use the PICVIDEO MJPEG codec) and currently my Black Magic Design Intensity card uses MJPEG for SD and HD.

Interesting. There sure isn't one that comes in Vegas. And I have nothing on any of my machines that puts one there. None of the codec packs I typically install have one either. Even the Wiki entry only talks about it's implementation in the .mov container.

Thanks for letting me know about these other options.

Vegas does have a built-in MJPEG .AVI decoder, I believe that started with Vegas v8. It does not, however, have an encoder.

Not that it matters...

Windows itself can decode mjpeg (motion jpeg) thru wmplayer code libraries [quartz etc] -- not sure when it started (around XP I think) because you need a 3rd party codec to encode, & once you've got that installed, Windows & everything else uses it. It has less hardware requirements than just about anything else, which I assume is why so many still cameras & cheaper electronics use some version of it. -- by cheaper I'm referring to the chips & design, & not necessarily the cost of whatever device...

Mjpeg dates back to the early 90's at least, when it required a hardware assist, often provided by Zoran chips -- Fast was one of the early editing hardware makers that used them/it. When CPUs got powerful enough to encode/decode mjpeg without hardware at the turn of this century, didn't matter as much because consumer grade hardware manufacturers had already switched to mpg2, for it's much smaller file size & data rate to hdd, & DV had caught on for pro-sumers & pros. Mjpeg has better color, is cheaper than licensed DV, but DV was build around a guaranteed constant data rate deemed more suitable for cams using tape. PicVideo's been around a while, has DS & VFW components, has 64 bit avail., but like it's competition hasn't really been actively developed a lot during the last few years -- wouldn't even begin to work in 7 64 when I tried it.

Thanks for all the information and help. I did not know that the codec would be part of the custom settings within the DV render choice. I expected the mjpeg to show up directly as a choice in Render As. Got the MainConcept mjpeg to work but discovered that the digital photo frame is not up to handling 640x480 30 fps. I'll try to find a frame that will accept Mpeg 4 or ? The frame I have is a Pandigital PI1051DWCB.

I wouldn't give up on it yet, since you did get it to display something. Try encoding the avi file at a very low bitrate and see if that file will play properly. If it does, keep increasing the bitrate until the frame no longer displays properly. I just looked up that frame model online and the product literature claims that it is able to play 800 x 600 MJPEG avi files. But then again, my wife once had a Fiat and it was purported to get 40+ mpg. I suppose that it would of, but it was hardly ever out of the shop.

Try a lower frame rate, say 15 or 8 fps.
