MKV files don't work

marcel-vossen wrote on 4/12/2024, 3:43 AM

Hi there,

How can I enable MKV files in vegas 15? It's a format that is used by Youtube AND Vimeo, so I would say it's ridiculous that it doesn't work when I try to use downloads from these platforms in a project?

Thanks in advance

I use yt-dlg to output m4a files which work fine.

MKV support in VEGAS is limited and unreliable- use a better container for editing. ShutterEncoder can remux it if you already have many files downloaded.

@marcel-vossen

VEGAS Pro 15 does not have any MKV support.

Newer versions of VEGAS Pro have some limited MKV support and VEGAS Pro 21 now has much more complete MKV support. Consider an upgrade.

VEGASSteve wrote on 4/12/2024, 8:05 AM

We can handle MKV files with information about the key frames, typically from camera devices. If this information is missing (typically ripped Internet movies), we cannot position in the files and do reject these.

Fully lossless conversion to MP4 as described above, should always be possible.

Thanks all for the help!

It's a real hassle to convert the files to something else first, since it's always stuff that needs to go out under time pressure... I get the question from my client to 'make a compilation of these 10 short youtube videos for me' to livestream them 2 or 3 hours later. So basically I simply don't have enough time for the conversion process AND the rendering of the new video AND putting them on the streaming platform in time...

Have a great weekend!

All you need is a workflow that doesn't involve intermediate MKV files. Do a couple of experiments (did you try the program I use?) to find one that works without intermediate steps.

Alternatively, depending on what is in the MKV you can remux it to MP4 in seconds, it's not a conversion.

However, these apps may grab the raw streams from YouTube which can be VP9. That's not editable in any version of VEGAS and needs conversion (full re-encode).

@marcel-vossen

Where are you getting your MKV files?

If by chance they are from OBS, it does its own in-app conversions to Vegas-friendly MP4.

There are a number of free conversion programs including Shutter Encoder, which shouldn't be that inconvenient to use with your 7 year old Vegas version.

For further peer support, start by providing your file details:

Hello @marcel-vossen, if you could provide a sample file, I could have a look, if or why it does (not) import. Maybe the specific distinctivnesses can be added/fixed.

Beware of re-using copyrighted footage from Youtube in your own projects. I recently heard about a person who was charged for several 100k Euros for using Youtube footage in his own Youtube uploads...

I have the latest version of VP21 and that still dosent like mkv files, so like the others say, find someway to convert them.

@Shogun__Gaming Could you share MediaInfo for what's in your MKV? Also you can see the developer above request a sample file that doesn't open or doesn't work well to test. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

@RogerS ill try and find some, but i usually just remux them instantly via obs to mp4, but the few times i tried dragging the mkv file in, it shows up in the timeline, but only one video track and no audio

That would be great- here's a chance to get the underlying problem fixed

Btw, when I use 4k Video Downloader for downloading your Youtube content, the resulting file is an mp4 an can be imported in Vegas without issues...

is it because its HEVC?

Shogun__Gaming wrote on 4/16/2024, 11:21 AM

fixed it..it was because of hevc, switched back to nvenc h264 and now it works fine :)

RogerS wrote on 4/16/2024, 7:10 PM

Good to know for program development purposes it's MKV-HEVC that is the problem.

Shogun__Gaming wrote on 4/16/2024, 10:25 PM

@RogerS its generally HEVC thats the problem, i tried rendering another one out in mp4 but used HEVC, nope, vegas dosent like that either

RogerS wrote on 4/16/2024, 10:29 PM

For development purposes could you just make short dummy videos with HEVC/MKV and HEVC/MP4 and put a link here for download (drive, box, dropbox, etc.)?

This is odd as HEVC in MP4 generally works in VEGAS.

You may also use iDealshare VideoGo to convert the unsupported video format like MKV to VEGAS supported format. To download online video and music files, Allavsoft works great.
